The 750m will have a bit better performance. Otherwise it's just whether you want an adequate 14" or 15.6" screen.

They are exactly the same internal hardware.

    Lenovo Y400 is smaller/lighter, but with a lower-resolution screen.
Lenovo Y500 is a bit larger & heavier, but with a higher-resolution screen.

    That's the only difference.

Y400 has a carbon fiber kinda casing while Y500 has a brushed matal top case and a plastic bottom. Y500 has a number pad on the right in addition to the regular keyboard. I don't know if there is anything else different.

The 1080p hi-res screen on Y500 make it better.

if you carry your laptop a lot, go for y400. but the weight difference is small. around half a pound only. if you watch movies on your laptop a lot and don't have an external display go for y500.

also i heard that y400 heats up more than a y500 considering a larger laptop will have better space for cooling system.

IMO, a 15.6" isn't even worth consideration, let alone owning, if it comes with a 768p display. That said, I'd go with the Y400.

Good thing the Y500 has the 1080p option for very little if no added cost depending on what configuration or deal you get.

IMO a 14'' laptop isn't worth consideration either if it doesn't come with at least a 900p screen.

Agreed, though I'm not sure if the Y400 even comes with a 900p option. Shame, really. But at least 768p on a 14" has a slightly higher PPI than 768p on a 15.6" display.

I can't stand 1366x768 screens. We literally had 1366x768 screens about 8 years ago as the standard for 14" or 15" laptops. Seeing a 1366x768 TN-panel screen on a laptop today is just unacceptable.

Even a 7" tablet has better resolution than 1366x768. There is absolutely no reason why a 14" or 15" laptop should have that today.

Yep the Y400 doesn't come with a 900p option. Another reason I didn't get that machine.

I totally agree. I think it's the market and cost-cutting measures among the PC manufacturers that has perpetuated the trend of low-quality notebook displays for so long. Until Apple and the rise of extremely high PPI tablets and smartphones I guess not enough people cared or actively looked for a high-quality display as a major purchasing factor so they didn't raise enough of an uproar for the OEM's to take notice. 768p screens were "good enough" since that's what everything else had.

besides the screen resolution difference between Y400 and Y500. I noticed one or two more differences.
According to the Y400 and Y500 spec sheets, does Y400 really has 2 USB 2.0 and ONE USB 3.0 port?
And Y500 has TWO USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 port?
Is it a typo in the Y400 and/or Y500 spec sheets?

Also according to the spec sheet, Y400 has max 8GB RAM and Y500 max 16GB RAM, is it true?
I remember I read somewhere someone has Y400 with 16GB RAM (bought on his own).

Only have 1 USB 3.0 port and/or cannot go to 16GB RAM will be deal breaker for me.

For NON-MSATA version of Y400 or Y500, can I add the msata later on (i.e. do they have the same motherboard with the msata slot)?

Both have two DIMM slots, correct? if so, you should be able to do 16GB in the Y400 (2x8GB).

You should be able to add your own mSATA SSD after buying the laptop. Just don't bother using it as a cache and instead use it as a real drive.

Just saying I have 16GB RAM and I don't think more than 6GB have been in use at one time yet
