Hi, I was wondering which screen is brigther, z60t or t42/43

the screen brightness will determine which one i'm going to purchase. are they about the same or significantly different? (i saw like a million threads and reviews about z60t having a very dim screen)

    thx

depends on which T42/43 screen. The 14 inch ones are dim. the 15" flexview is brighter. Not sure where XGA 15s fall.

Officially, the Z60t is brighter. Unofficially, the feelings are mixed and you'll get different opinions from different people.

Flexview is good, Z60m screens are good. Other Thinkpad screens are "meh".

alright cool. i think z60t will do then...officially its better, but even if not, at least it will be about the same as the t42/43(talking about 14 inch here) right? and i think the t42/43 is adequat in terms of brightness (i saw one in the store)

    thx.

Read the Thinkpad tabook. According to that, some Z60 series have a bright 300nit screen. T series does not offer anything more than 200nits AFAIK.

Only the Z60m offer 300nits screen.

I don't trust these nits ratings really. The Z60t screen is rated 200nits, just as bright as the T-series 15" Flexview. In practice I daresay, the Flexview is going to be noticeably brighter and more evenly lit too.

Pardon this dumb question, but I've believed (perhaps incorrectly) that screen brightness just a function of the intensity of the back light and the transmissivity of the screen itself.

So, from the manufacturers' perspective, can't the screen brightness be improved by simply using a brighter backlight ? Admittedly, brighter usually implies using more energy, thus resulting in less battery life.

By no means an expert on this, but it _could_ be that installing too strong backlights will wash out the display and distort its color reproduction. Certain displays may have different levels of acceptable backlighting, which would limit the manufacturer's ability to impact the brightness. But that is just a wild guess.
