I have an old IBM notebook computer. I just turned it on today after i bought a network card to finally connect my laptop to my network and I get this whsitlig high pitch sound coming from the computer. could this be the harddrive going or the fan? I can work perfectly fine within the computer, so i am leaning towards the fan...

Probably the fan. When drives fail it's normally a clicking sound.
