Especially when the room is silent, my t61p is extremely loud. I don't know how to describe the sound but there seems to be 2 distinct pitches. One is a high pitched sound and the other one is like a rumble. I think the rumble is coming from the hard drive because it gets loud during startup, when i load programs or when I defragment the disk. Does anyone know how to make these sounds go away. and please explain what they mean?

My t61p is RIDICULOUSLY quiet, I can barely hear anything coming from it.

What type of HDD do you have on it?

Hm, I have the same speed but only 100GBs...

My guess is it's just a faulty HD, unfortunately.

Is it your DVD/CD drive spinning up when you are watching a movie or something? If it is there is nothing you can do about it. You might be hearing your laptop's fan too if you are running a game or something. When do you hear this noise?

Mine is pretty quiet, but obvously the hdd makes noises when you are using it, especially if it's a 7200 rpm hdd. Also, the high pitche sound is probably the cpu whine (you could search the forum about other ppl's complains about it) which is the result of the cpu going in and out of a power saving state depending on use. You could eliminate this by setting your power setting to maximum performance and staying on AC power unless you absolutely have to use the battery.

GOD DAM IT. They won't send onsite repair or replace my laptop so I'll have to send it in for 5-7 days. It's probably going to come back with the same problems.

wow this is the worst laptop i've ever had. turns out that the speakers are ****ed too. Whenever I turn up the volume there is a loud hissing sound. At this point, I am just incredibly disappointed and slightly pissed off.

Ask them for a complete replacement. What kind of warranty service did you have?

Mine is quiet with the exception of:

The DVD drive WAS noisy. Changing it to quiet mode in the bios made it fairly quiet. I'm sure this decreases it's performance, but it is an acceptable trade off. I wish this were adjustable in the OS instead of having to reboot to get to it.

In a perfectly silent room I can hear my Samsung 320 GB drive 'chirp'

If I have a movie playing the bezel on the right speaker vibrates. Pressing on the bezel kills the noise. I'm debating on whether to have Lenovo fix it or try to myself.

I have a 7K200 in my T61P, but I had the 7K100 before, and I find the noise level to be reasonable given the CPU and GPU in the machine.

For DVD viewing, I would check the CD/DVD drive speed in the Power manager/Global Power Settings/Advanced. I use silent, otherwise the DVD drive will be pretty fast and noisy.

While you are in the power manager, you might try some other settings, and try making your own scenarios. At the lowest process speed, the fan may even shut off. Using adaptive setttings are good for most things. I also made one called WFO, for Wide Fu%#ing Open, making the machine run as fast as it can.

I feel ya on that one. I have the most basic warranty as well and it sucks that you have to be without your laptop for that long with no guarantee of the issue being resolved.
