If I am using my t500 surfing the net in a public place, would anyone be able to hack into my laptop? If so what do I need to do to secure someone from hacking into my laptop. I am talking about wifi.
    Thanks

You can't really stop someone really competent from hacking in...All you can do is too use a firewall or a internet security suite.

A firewall is usually enough in those cases. However, you’re bigger concern here is someone capturing your unencrypted Wi-Fi traffic—or hijacking a TCP session—and your best defense here is to make certain your are using some sort of encryption, such as a VPN or SSL, when doing anything of importance over a public Wi-Fi connection. Also, this is not Lenovo-specific and affects anyone using open Wi-Fi.

    Any modern card supports WPA.

If you are checking your email while using a public wifi spot you may want to consider using gmail, you have enable HTTPS to prevent someone from being able to eavesdrop on your websurfing.

    How to enable gmail HTTPS
    from http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/gmail-account-security-tips.html

    3. Enable "Always use HTTPS." Any time you visit a webpage, your computer needs to send and receive information across the Internet. HTTPS is used to encrypt data as it is transmitted between computers on the Internet, so look for the "https" in the URL bar of your browser to indicate that the connection between your computer and Gmail's servers is encrypted. We use HTTPS on the Gmail login page, and you can choose to protect your entire Gmail session with HTTPS as well. HTTPS can make your mail slower, so we let you make the choice for yourself. Open Settings and choose "Always use HTTPS" on the General tab if you want to turn it on.
