When I try to transfer large amounts of data in the gigabytes over the LAN, my wifi gets disconnected.
Anyone have any experience with this and know of any solutions? I have the Intel Wifi Link 5100

Try updating the firmware on your access point or the driver for the card.

Try uninstalling the wi-fi drivers in programs and features control panel, along with any other wi-fi software you can find. then install the latest ones from Intel/Lenovo here:

This is how mine runs and it works fine -
Sure, updating drivers either from Lenovo or directly from Intel is important. But I had kind of a similar issue while emailing 10MB-13MB files and getting time outs. Go to Advance setting of your WiFi card and under Roaming Aggressiveness select Lowest. At least it resolved problem in my case. I guess my wifi link quality fluctuates a little bit. This will prevent wireless client from roaming which results in connection drops causing large file transfer issues. Just try it and see if it helps.
