When I try to transfer large amounts of data in the gigabytes over the LAN, my wifi gets disconnected.

Anyone have any experience with this and know of any solutions? I have the Intel Wifi Link 5100

Try updating the firmware on your access point or the driver for the card.

Sure, updating drivers either from Lenovo or directly from Intel is important. But I had kind of a similar issue while emailing 10MB-13MB files and getting time outs. Go to Advance setting of your WiFi card and under Roaming Aggressiveness select Lowest. At least it resolved problem in my case. I guess my wifi link quality fluctuates a little bit. This will prevent wireless client from roaming which results in connection drops causing large file transfer issues. Just try it and see if it helps.
