Probably not anytime soon. Thinkpads cater to the business/mobile users. A 17" laptop isn't practical for travelling.

Why do you need a Thinkpad? Is this for gaming?

I don't really do much gaming, its just that Lenovo has always appealed to me.

Have you look at HPs business class 17in laptop?

    The HP Compaq nx9420,nw9440, 8710p,8710w

You're probably thinking of their consumer models. Business computers are not the same as consumer computers. The former has better hardware and support and vice versa.

Yeah. Business laptops no matter who you get it from(asus/dell/hp/lenovo)are more durable and have a better build quality(magnesium allou chassis, shock mounted hdd) the consumer line. They also usually have domestic(US based) tech support and come with a 3 year warranty.

Ugh, I always thought desktop replacements are a waste of money. Your stuck with a slow response 6 bit display.

But I am kinda surprised that Lenovo hasn't tried yet, as one of their now discontinued Z consumer oriented line.

Lenovo might do it, under their own brand models, not the Thinkpad range.

Well, you have heard that about their consimer line - HP Pavillion... most probably.

Othrewise, the HP business line is very close to the ThinkPad line in terms of build quality and keyboard.

Yep. All of these are excellent notebooks, virtually some of the best built 17" notebooks on the market.

Some people like myself NEED desktop replacements. Any computer I take with me to school needs to be able to go through an airport without being overweight or oversize. This means I can't bring a desktop with me. So while I agree that most 17" desktop replacements suck, there are some people who need them. I was even looking at the dell 21" and I would get it if it weren't for the high price.

Not a big market for business class 17" notebooks. You probably won't see one in the Thinkpad space. Lenovo just doesn't see demand for it in quantity.

Going back to the original question: Yes.

Not a ThinkPad though. Not unless they create some kind of business oriented graphics workstation laptop. :)
