I ordered a 14 inch T61 with the following specs:
    2.0 Ghz 4mb Cache
    14.1WXGA +TFT,W/OCAM
    NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 140M
    1GB PC2-5300 667MHZ 1DIMM(to be upgraded to 3 for now)
60 GB HDD,5400RPM(to be upgraded to 200 GB 7200 rpm)
    INTEL TURBO MEMORY 1GB
    INT.WIRE.WIFI/LINK4965AGN

I am putting vista ulitmate 64 bit and ubuntu 64 bit on it and will be running 2 or 3 19 inch monitors. My quesiton is will this be enough to last for 7yrs with the rate new technology is coming out?

I do not play any games and the most demanding apps I will be running are photoshop and sony vegas, but having mulptiple monitors, usually run numerous programs at the same time.

Since it is delayed untill 9/4 should I upgrade anything or wait it out for peryn or another refresh? I currently have an hp nc6000 with 1.5 gbs or ram and a pentium M 1600 MHZ processor that struggles running vegas.

Thanks for the advice and sorry for the long thread.

    7 years?

With those specs, it should last you at least 8, maybe 9!!!

I used to own a 1.2ghz amd athlon machine(since 2001) with 256 megs of ram. If I had it today, it would still suit my needs perfectly, six years later. I ended up parting it out because I got a laptop.

I'm pretty sure for basic computing your rig will be more than ample.

    Why not.

I used, until very recently, a desktop for over seven years. And I used it constantly for work and downloading pornography every day. It still worked fine when I tucked it away.

hey man i plan on keeping this laptop for a good 5-7 yrs that is why i have purchased a 5yr warranty plus a very good backpack to carry it. i have heard alot of people tell me that i am an idot and that it is a thinkpad you should just it like a thinkpad.

you know something you have to take care of it to make it last you. for example a benz engine is meant to last for a long time but it does mean that you should treat it like ****. i am a student and i am a engineer and think that this laptop is going to last me a long time. actually my p4 laptop from dell would have lasted me but the only problem is that it is really heavy. 11lb and i think that is not good to carry all the time and the other thing is that i carry textbooks and notebooks as well has all other goods. so it is hard for me.

It all depends what you do. Personally, I find I need to upgrade ever year or atleast every other year. Mainly due to advances in GPUs more than anything else.

BTW: to run more than one external monitor, your going to need the advanced dock with a dual head graphics card. I suppose it would be possible to run two external monitors with the advanced mini dock IF you disable the built in lcd first.

Ok...I have an inspiron 8200. Brand new it almost cost 3,000 dollars...(although I didn't pay close to that amount as I got it from a large corporation that was liquidating them). It's superpi to 2 million is 3 minutes 45 seconds...it's about five years old. Don't waste money future proofing...technology is out dated to fast...buy what suffices your needs. As long as you will be running the same programs 7 years down the road then you fine. But will you really be using a version of photoshop that is 7...8...or 9 years old...(ie CS2)...? And will 6 and 8 megapixel cameras really be the standard...or will we start seeing 16 megapixels cameras...?

Guarantee you as well that 19" lcd monitors seven years down the road will start costing around 50 bucks...just like crt's people won't know how to get rid of them...!

Sure why not, by the time Lenovo finally gets it to you it'll probably be 3-4 years from now. :(

Hell, if my grandpa's Dell inspiron 8500 has lasted him since 2000, an IBM will last a lot longer!

by then a multimedia desktop replacement would have 19 inch diagonals and weigh less than 4 lbs.
