dell's having a sale at the moment, and u2711 is 2560x1440 resolution, will my x200t be able to run 2 of them at the same time?

    cheers

I don't believe so. I think you only have a VGA connector on the x200t. Even if you get a ultra base dock with one vga and 1 dvi, I don't think it will do dual 2560x1440.

So how much are you getting your dell for? X200t with the ultrabase can only run one 2711 at its native resolution, the vga can't support the 2711 at its native resolution as far as i know.

The Diplayport 1.2 standard supports multiple monitors. Since Lenovo supports sound in the "10" versions of T & W series DP, I expect they implemented v1.2. From VESA

The standard supporting something does NOT mean it has been implemented, though. There MAY be some adapters that support multiple DP or DVI monitors from the mini DP port. Since I'm not an IT guy, that goes way beyond my "enthusiast" knowledge base...

I don't think the X200 series laptops (which predate T410, T510, etc.) support DP v1.2.

    mini-DP port? Thinkpad doesn't use mini-DP.

I ordered one yesterday for A$679, but I haven't paid yet, because I am not sure if my laptop will be able to run it.

    got my U2711.

seems that my x200t have problem running the monitor at its native resolution, when connected with displayport at 2560x1440, the monitor randomly turn off for a sec, happens about once every hour, the same thing happened when I run at a lower resolution.

however no such problem exist when running at a lower resolution of 1920x1080 with VGA cable.

update your bios, graphics card driver....

My Thinkpad R500, T500, X200 are all having this problem when running the U2410 and U2711 using the native displayport in both win 7 and vista. It is driving me insane.

interesting, I don't know anything about bios...

Anyway, the problem seems to disappear when I have the monitor in portrait mode.

btw, if I turn down the brightness or contrast of this monitor, will this saving me on my energy bill?

Brightness yes, since the CCFL backlight will use less power. But i am not sure how much you will save by doing this (a dollar a month will be optimistic).

I turn down the brightness to conserve the CCFL backlight's longevity, as the CCFL only has around 20,000 hrs of life, unlike the LED backlight which can last around 100,000 hrs (comparable to a CRT).

20,000 hours is for full brightness, if you tune it down then the life expectancy increases. You may get 4 years if you are lucky. If it fails within the 3 years, then you would have the 3 years warranty to cover it. Maybe you should have got the 5 years warranty instead.

Why is your monitor on 24 hrs a day? do you stay up 24 hrs a day?

the problem have gone away since i started using the active dell dp to dual link dvi adapter on the R500 and T500. It seems that for some reason using the display through native dp to dp port is causing this screen problem.

    Nope, the problem still exist.

I just wanted to find out if the flickering problem is common among U2711 or was it just my U2711 that was having this problem.

by the way, where can I get the dp to dual dvi adapter, I couldn't find anything on Ebay.

And also is your U2711's screen loose around the top edges

What brightness are you running the U2711 at (maximum or below 70%)? The flickering does occur with DP port on the Thinkpads R500 and T500 for some reason, but it is not always there, sometimes it occur sometimes it doesn't. I have tried this with mine S10 Thinkstation and there is no flickering at all. What do you mean the screen is loose on the top? you mean the plastic frame around it?

My friend just took mine U2711 today as he needs it do some photoshop and CAD assignment for his Architectural Course. When i packet it up for him in the box, i did not detect the looseness of plastics around the top edge.

Dell sells them for around 100 dollars. I think you can try it for 2 or 3 weeks, if it doesn't work then Dell provides 100% refund (but you should check the exact T&C of Dell Australia website). I got mine free from a friend.

all I can find on dell website is this adapter.

looseness I am talking about is that the screen is not glue properly to the hinge. It seem that this problem is pretty prevalent on Whirlpool.

DELL DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Adapter for OptiPlex / Latitude / Alienware Laptops / Precision/ Precision Mobile Workstations : Desktop Accessories | Dell

Okay, i haven't checked the Australian website, but these are available in USA.

    Sapphire also produces something similar.

Regarding the screen wobbling on the hinge, yes it is prevalent in U2410 too (it doesn't inspire much confidence), and the U2711 is even heavier. Hopefully this not going to end up like the Samsung monitors where the spring breaks off from the weight of the LCD.

Also, the U2711 LCD is fixed to the hinge/stand set using screws and it is not glued on. If you feel that the wobbling is serious, then you should contact Dell and ask for a hinge replacement (i suspect they would send you a new LCD).
