windows kept updating, and now my boot times slowed dramatically after clean installing an ssd and installing a few apps. Should i just do another clean install? boot time is about 60secs...it gets stuck in a black screen after the windows logo gui is finished (just before the login password interface is shown). Didn't happen before -.-

    BTW im running this on a i5 x220 intel 310 80gig

Why did you reinstall windows to start with? What are you using as the Windows source? The integrated SP1 DVD via an external drive?

After Windows is installed, what drivers and software was installed?

You didn't really need to reinstall to remove the partitions and reclaim the space but I guess that's a moot point now.

Even a slow SATA 1 SSD should boot in about 30 to 40 seconds. Check your MSconfig and make sure you don't have a ton of stuff starting. I only have Security Essentials and Power Manager set to start up. Also get rid of the splash screen (starting windows) and make sure multi-core boot is selected in MSconfig.

This is a good SSD guide:

i didn't have an external dvd drive to burn the recovery disc...basically i installed all the drives after installing the "System Update" software. Im going to start right again...what drives are absolutely necessary? Pardon my ignorance, i just installed all the drives because i'm new with thinkpads and i came with the assumption that all drivers are needed.

Oh and i downloaded the windows 7 64 bit here : Download Windows 7 ISO (Official 32-bit and 64-bit Direct Download Links) My Digital Life

oh and i also tried that ssd optimization guide with hopes that it'll solve the boot problem without having to reinstall windows..didn't change much. I try that guide after i reinstall.

Btw guys when i reinstall windows it will automatically format the old windows 7 in the msata ssd right?

Yeah, that's a pretty slow boot time. I can do that with my HDD. I'd try running msconfig and making sure that there aren't that many things.

It appears from your descriptions that the machine is getting hammered with updates. Those source .ISO images don't look to be SP1 versions of Windows 7 so you can expect Windows update to drop 100 patches and updates to your machine. Combine that with whatever Lenovo is doing and you can expect it will take quite a while to quiesce.

And FYI, I am downloading the Win7 Prof x64 image from the location you cited. I want to see for myself how it checks out. I intend to check the MD5 hash against the official image from Microsoft. I'm guessing you didn't do that before you installed.

Yes, but you should manually format drive at the page choosing partition to setup (advanced).

Try this order. Windows (you already get it) -> SP1 (download offline install file manually) -> Install Vaccine, Intel RST, Intel Chipset Driver, Intel Wireless Driver, Intel Graphic Driver, Intel SSD toolbox (manually) -> Connect Internet -> Windows Update (several times until no update) -> ThinkVantage System Update (several times until no update)

and you really do not need any optimization or registry trick, just stick with official stuff.

You can remove or disable Lenovo software after this, and seriously there is nothing to remove.

yeah Thors your right actually its not SP1 version...but windows actually updated itself to the SP1 version just yesterday, and thats when i started experiencing slow boot times -.-...any recommendations as to where to get a legit windows 7 pro .iso? I could get off torrents but i try to opt out of that seeing as most of them are cracked versions and i don't need a cracked version since i have a legit key. Plus its illegal (if it matters)

i was following Hearts' guide here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/596436-x220-clean-install-2.html

thanks btw...everything was good until everything started updated itself.

I would give your machine 2-3 days to settle down. A lot is likely going on. All kinds of incoming binary data that needs to be scanned by anti virus, indexed by search, etc.

Speaking of which, what anti virus product are you using?

I would also look carefully at the items in startup. Easily done using msconfig or regedit. Don't make changes unless you know what you are doing. :D

    Is this machine domain joined?

i'm just using malwarebytes and avg free version...i presume that these programs are not scanning randomly since i configured it to scan only once a month. But yeah I'll wait another day (or at least ill try). Any ideas as to where to get this windows 7 pro sp1 iso? i feel like i already messed up the system thats why

Is there a place to download a legal copy of Win 7 with SP1 already installed?

@turned2black, i just found one released by Microsoft itself (since its coming from Microsoft we can assume its a safe copy). You would need to validate that your windows 7 is genuine first though and then you could download the corresponding iso file (i.e:64 bit or 32bit)

Yes, the TechNet and MSDN subscriber download center.

I also installed SP1 via windows update after a clean install. I'm not sure if i'm having a similar issue.
Boot takes about 45-50sec for me when i'm running an mSATA with 207/163MBps sequential read write and 12/32mbps 4k times.
I've also tried to minimise startup processes and services according to the blackviper guide and done the SSD review guide. Any other tips of improving boot time.

I would not be at all surprised to learn the anti malware and anti virus products you are running are the culprits. But I am not expert on the performance of the various security products.

On a different note, the Win7 Prof x64 .ISO from the download site you used has the same MD5 hash as the .ISO from the MSDN subscriber download area.

Someone who was clued up on security posted that he recommended Malwarebytes for dealing with a virus but not to be used ongoingly. I no longer leave it installed on my system.

really? Just when I was about to reinstall it lol. Well i guess i'll just use avg antivirus :). Thanks guys oh and btw i did a clean install and boot time is <30s from the time i press the button so its all good now.

And @Thor i took your advice about the Windows 7 SP1, i managed to sliptream the normal image with a SP1 image...working fine now--and im not riddled with so many updates by windows now.
