I am loving this machine so far. it was definitely worth the wait but not worth the stress lol. i just have a few questions.
1) what is the point to click for the track point. when i enabled it and i pressed on the track point nothing happend, it just jittered the mouse arrow because of the strength that i was putting on it. any ideas?
2) how do you make recovery media, i looked in thinkvantage but couldnt really find it.
thanks
-
Congrats on the X201!
I can only answer the first question. To use the point and click, I had to push down on the trackpoint hard enough to flex my keyboard. So, to use the point to click, you have to push down hard without moving the trackpoint. I personally don't like the point and click so I disabled it. -
actually i just figured it out and you don't have to push down hard. you just tap on the stick with a little bit of force. you don't actually push down but you just kind of hit it with your finger.
-
Ohh wow that does work. Feels weird for me to use though
-
also another question is how do i use the fingerprint reader to log on to websites. i was able to do it with the HP fingerprint reader, is it possible to do it on the x201?
-
you would have use the CSS software, there should be setting within the Thinkvantage software set to let you do that.
-
can you tell me where exacly it is i don't see it. all i see is a password manager and when i try to use the type and transfer tool with firefox it didn't work.
-
I can't as I don't use CSS or have the fingerprint reader, but congrats on the machine. Fantastic little notebooks, aren't they?
-
. +Rep!
I've been trying to figure out how to set passwords with the fingerprint reader too but gave up quickly after I couldn't find it in the ThinkVantage. lol
Oh yeah, and congrats on the machine! -
i think i figured out how to do passwords with fingerprint reader. i had to download the client security solution software from lenovo. after that, all i had to do was enter in my login and it will ask you if you want to save it in the password manager. then you can customize how you want the laptop to enter the password and i chose fingerprint.
also what is the best way to burn recovery dvd's should i go to "computer" and double click on the recovery partition or go to the lenovo thinkvantage tools. also i don't have an external dvd drive so is it good to use a shared drive over the network? is that reliable?
also does lenovo provide extra eraser-heads with the x201 i can't seem to find them -
If you want to burn recovery DVDs, you'll actually have to get an external DVD burner. I got one for about $70 on sale at Best Buy. It's an LG brand and it works really well. I don't think the recovery software will allow you to put the recovery on anything except DVDs.
I never made the recovery DVDs. I bought the external DVD drive so I could install my own copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I tried to install it with a flash drive but for some reason the X201 wouldn't boot from it. It boots fine from a Linux-install flash drive but not Windows. So I had to get the external drive to do my clean-install of Windows. During the install I deleted all partitions on the hard drive. I don't need a recovery partition taking up space. I have Acronis TrueImage 2010 which will do the same thing (make recovery disks, including bootable media).
I got a packet of extra "eraserheads" at a computer store (Micro Center), but I think you can order them from Lenovo or maybe find them on Newegg or Amazon. Or possibly you can order them from Micro Center's website.
To access the Recovery program, press the blue ThinkVantage button at the boot screen or I think you can also access it from the start menu... in the Lenovo or ThinkVantage folders. Maybe also from the ThinkVantage Toolbox. Most of the info you need is in the help files which are already on your computer. Just do some looking around on your computer and you'll usually find the info you need. And then there's Lenovo's website and Google. -
Congratulations Kev!
I hope you are enjoying your 201t!
If you're looking for a cheaper external DVD burner, Walmart has a nice price on one of it's slim line DVD burners.
$45 shipped!

thanks but i still am not sure how to create recovery media that will act the same as if i recovered it through thinkvantage during boot. i ask this because i might get a bigger drive later on so i would like it if i can just restore the laptop to how i initially got it.
right now i am seeing two options. one is to double click the recovery partition and it asks me to create recovery media another way is to go to thinkvantage tools and create it that way. both ways give me different prompts when i click on them so is there a difference? -

Laughing Out Loud rolling on my bed.
When I got my x200t, I did a complete windows 7 format and install. I just completely wiped off my recovery partition and anything else that was on the drive, and went from there.
I'm sure either of the ways you posted would get the job done. I would perform the recovery with thinkvantage, it should give you a walk thru type recovery process. But right now, don't do anything till you get a DVD/CD burner. -
so the software won't let me write to a dvd burner shared on the network?
also is there a way to middle click either with the trackpoint or the trackpad. i use this a lot to open link in new tabs. i've searched and found some people using key mapping software but i don't see a script that works -
I'm getting slow in my day...
-
Kevinf, which version of Lenovo CSS are you using? I've been trying to make the download manager work on firefox (Win7) but it's not working using download manger 3.0 since the manager only supports up to FF3.
-
i am using the latest one don't remember the veresion. i just googled "client security solution windows 7" and used the first link that popped up
-
I'm using the same version of CSS. What version is your FF and download manager? Thanks.
-
i'm using firefox 3.6.8 and thinkvantage password manager 3.0
-
Does your password manager say "Not compatible with FF3.6.8"?
-
hi pal, you should check this! http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkvantage_en/tvtvrnr43_1027en.txt
look this paragraph:

An internal error occurs while you are creating rescue media on a non-Lenovo USB memory key
Starting from the Rescue and Recovery program version 4.3, the Create Rescue Media program supports
USB memory keys. If the user tries to create rescue media on a non-Lenovo USB memory key, the Master
Boot Record (MBR) data will not be formatted or cleaned. This is an internal error.
To solve the problem, fully format the USB memory key by doing the following:
1. Click Start -> Run. Type cmd in the field.
2. Type diskpart.
3. Type select disk N, where N is the disk number of the USB memory key.
4. Type clean. -
i will be buying an external dvd drive soon. i do have one more small problem though and that's with scrolling. for some reason itunes doesn't scroll with either the trackpoint or the touch pad. after i read a few posts i saw that i had to modify some file in the synaptics folder and it worked.
why was that necessary though? is it because the driver doesn't support it? after doing the fix side scrolling still doesn't work in itunes, any idea on how to get that working?
another weird thing is that i am not able to scroll in the personalization menu from right clicking the desktop. i am not able to scroll the themes that are in the menu and have to use the scroll bar on the side. does this happen with you guys too? i just did think that a windows window would have this problem and it only affected programs. -
Can I ask how you like the keyboard (perhaps in comparison to whatever computer you're upgrading from)?

Works perfectly! -
lol but the only thing bad about that is scrolling doesn't work in places like my documents or control panel anymore. i think i've gotten used to just right clicking and clicking on open in new tab lol
-
For middle clicking and scrolling with the center button check out these two threads:
