I bought this lenovo n100 for a steal last week on a price mistake. I know it is a downgrade from my thinkpad in every regard save specs... but maybe not even that from what I hear about vista.
So I have yet to break the seal, and am still debating on whether to return it or not. so my question is- knowing vista business likes more than 1gb, will the n100 running vista business on core duo 1.83GHz be sluggish, or the same, or better vs the older pm technology on my old thinkpad, running xp pro (1.86GHz w/512mb).

That was that "price mistake"? Maybe somebody will gladly buy it from you?
I suspect you can add more RAM easily -
Both slots are located on the underside.

Just pumped up your RAM to 1GB minimum (the Y400 itself have 1,5GB RAM (512MB default plus 1GB upgrade). -
And his is Vista Business, only 1GB? -
1,5 GB RAM Vista Home Premium actually. But i dont think it will differ much than Business. Core Duo certainly is more than capable to crunch Vista's code.

You shouldn't have a problem with 1GB of RAM and Vista. Just make sure there isn't a crapload of stuff running that you don't want, this is true of XP too. Lenovo's preinstalls are comparatively light on bloatware, but I still saw a nice speed bump after doing a clean Vista install on my T60.
Also, for excessive HDD usage issues on Vista try disabling Windows Defender, it should help a lot. -
I run a slimmed down version of Vista on a Pentium-M 2.0ghz with 1gb RAM and it's pretty slow compared to XP. I also have almost no background programs running. I run into the problem of vista using 400+ MB and when doing anything moderate, like heavy browsing, it will start to heavily use the page file slowing the system down greatly.

I never know whether Pentium M could become so dragged with Vista (knowing that Core Duo is based on Pentium M also- but there is no slowdown in Vista).
Any other who have Vista on Pentium M system can confirm this?
worse performance: vista business on T2350 w/1GB or XPpro on PM750 w/512MB
