I have done so and would do so again... though my second time doing so was less than ideal.

Indeed, make sure that you check what you receive! I ordered a refurbished laptop and had a friend bring it to me at a conference overseas. I was astonished and quite disappointed to learn that the battery would not charge nor was the HD the capacity I had ordered. There may have been another discrepancy/problem, as well. Upon contacting support, I was able to return it and obtain a full refund... but it was a hassle.

I imagine this issues/risks like this abound with the majority if not all manufacturers.

Another issue to consider is that refurbs usually come with very limited warranties, in the neighborhood of 90 days. You just need to weigh the pros and cons of each choice...

I dunno, but the deals are too good to resist. If it sucks, I'll return it. Yesterday I bought:
    rocessor Intel® Core™2 Duo P8600 (2.40GHz, 3MB L2, 1066MHz FSB)
Operating System Genuine Windows Vista Business 32
    Outlet Part Number CA2082XF2
    Condition Refurbished
    Display 15.4” WSXGA+ (1680 X 1050) TFT
    Total Memory 3GB (1GB & 2GB) PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory
Hard Drive 160GB, 7200RPM Serial ATA 2.5" Drive
Graphics AMD M86M Switchable Graphics 256MB
Optical Device DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer Ultrabay Slim
Wireless Intel WiFi Link 5100 (1x2 AGN)
    Mobile Broadband N/A
Battery 9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (6.0 Hour Run Time)
    Limited Warranty 1 Year
    Color Black
    Bluetooth Yes
    Integrated Camera No
    Fingerprint Reader Yes
Keyboard/Pointing Device UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    Manufacturing part number 20828ZU

    For $597 out the door.

This sells, today, on the Lenovo site, for $1174 + taxes + CA recycling fee. The coupon covers the taxes + recycling fee cost, so it's about $1150 out-the-door.

It's tough to argue with a nearly 50% discount on the refurb. And the warranty is 1 year, right?

Are you in CA or US? Sorry to spoil your fun but that's very average price for a T500 even for Canadian customers. I'd cancel it and get one from a trusted Ebay reseller.

I'm in the US. I was considering eBay, but T500s selling for $600 were either A) similarly specced, but actually used, or B) had fewer features (e.g. no discrete graphics, or only a 6 cell battery).

I was surprised that Lenovo outlet could beat eBay prices, but with the current 20% coupon it does.

Wood eye? I did. When you consider the notebook I got was more than $300 off from what it costs new, even with the 20% coupons right now, I'd say it's worth the risk.

Goto the Lenovo outlet site and you can see it for yourself.

At the top of the page, you should see the announcement that you can use the SAVE20 coupon to take 20% off the outlet price. Today is the last day, and as far as I can see, most of the low-price and high-value items have already been picked clean on Friday.
