A few days ago, a low, intermittent buzzing/zipper sound started coming from what I think is the HDD on my x1, after 3 weeks of running completely silently. The noise happens whether or not the hard drive activity light is on. I ran the hardware check in the thinkvantage toolbox, and everything "passed".

Today, I noticed that when I try to play a video in media player (saved file) the video stops and starts frequently (never a problem before the noise started)

I will probably send it in to lenovo at the end of the week- but anyone have any ideas about what the problem could be? I am a novice, so Id like to inform myself as much as I can before taking what lenovo says at face value

    thanks!

Download and run HDTune, and go to the "SMART" tab. If everything checks out there, chances are, your HDD is fine. You can also try opening your X1 and seeing if the HDD is properly seated with the rubber rails. Another possibility is that the noise is coming from the fan (which would need to be replaced).

update- had planned to call lenovo this weekend, after a train trip this week. After I got home from my trip (and the x1's first trip outside of the house) the noise stopped. It is completely gone and has been since wednesday- so I guess something had been knocked into a non-optimal position somehow- and was shifted back into place on the train/during travel bumps?

strange- will keep an ear on it.
