I'm starting this thread to see who ordered the x120e with DOS and if it will indeed ship with DOS. It was available on lenovo's spp and student sites but is not available any more.
I ordered the x120e with DOS and I'm hoping Lenovo does not cancel. For those who ordered with DOS, let me know if you get any info from Lenovo.
-
Snuck in one with it last night from the /friendsandfamily site. So far so good, estimated ship 3/4/11.
Seeing as HP gets away with selling Windows-less business machines through their site all the time, I really would be disappointed if Lenovo decided to cancel the order on that basis. -
I was about to order last night, when I arranged a deal for my brother to buy it today (he owes me money, so win-win). I don't think I'll order one now...
-
Below is the thread where I found the deal. One user reported a cancellation, not by email, but by checking the status of his/her order. Several other users, including myself, are still reporting that their order is expected to ship on 3/4/11.

I call Lenovo today to change my configuration, and they told me all the order with the dos is LOCKED. I can't change my order unless I get a Microsoft OS. The chance of it getting cancel is pretty high, they are looking at that option.
-
Well, locked could mean that they won't be taking any other orders of DOS and they will configure from the original order without changes. I'm not sure how high the chance of cancellation is, that's subjective.
-
The representative told me that the sale team are "looking to see if they could fulfill the order" since normally they don't offer that option.
They had cancel all l412 with dos os last year. -
Thank you, that's some good info. They did cancel L412 with dos last year, I saw the Slickdeals thread where people were receiving cancellations.
Here's a guess though, there are probably A TON more orders for the x120e fusion than the L412. Most people who ordered the x120e with DOS purchased it for 300-399. The L412 was for about $500, great deal, but not as cheap as the x120e.
This is probably why they have to "looking to see if they could fulfill the order". -
Hopefully they do ship out these order or else I might have to wait til the arrival of the e420s.

I think offering an option of not adding the OS can probably be their secret marketing arsenal against competitors like HP and Sony's similar offerings that a lot of people on the edge about which to choose.
From engadget & forum comments, a lot of the complainers are often linux users whom typically have the mindset of viewing themselves as taking a hit and being 'forced' to buy windows for any notebook that they want, and so they opt for or support the HP dm1z in this case because it offers Windows Home instead of Pro, which is also why its cheaper because of the lower end OS.
But take out the OS out of the equation and suddenly everything is on a much level playing field on cost, swaying more customers. -

Well, most people don't realize that when you buy a new computer, a portion of that does go to Microsoft for the windows license. (OEMs buy them in bulk, then they pass the cost on to you). What really angers me is that you can hardly find computers these days WITHOUT windows, unless you go with apple. So you are FORCED to buy a windows license whether you need it or want it, or not.
Just ticks me off if Lenovo will pull this option. Since I don't use windows any more I just simply refuse to pay for a license that I don't need or want. It's total BS. -
estimated ship date of 3-7 for me so far. i contacted a rep through chat yesterday morning to have them upgrade the shipping for $10, i hope i didnt mess up my chance of getting this thing shipped to me. when i click on the order status link, only half of the page loads, it doesnt show the system config anymore. according to them the order has not been cancelled yet!
-
I noticed a little while ago that the DOS option was removed. Damn microsoft.
-
-
Sad this isnt an option on all business class laptops from all vendors. There are alot of us that either a) dont use windows or b) already have a licensed copy.
-
Exactly my point liquidxit2, you are forced to buy a windows license whether you want to or not, it's stupid. There's virtually no choice for the consumer.

I'm so lucky I got the DOS deal from lenovo.
My 1st order was from the regular lenovo site.
My 2nd order was from the SPP site with WIN7
My 3rd order was from the SPP site with DOS
I cancelled the first and second order and kept the third, so happy I found the slick deals website. I saved ~$175 from the very first order. Lenovo should take note how popular the DOS option was. I would be happy to pay lenovo a small fee for a DOS/Linux laptop. I know its a niche but atleast have the option available, cant be that expensive. Plus they can charge a small fee, very small fee, for a DOS/Linux laptop. -
The problem is that most IT departments wont use the install anyways and power users wont either. The only people who use a standard install are those who dont care and just want a working computer. There are more then enough power users and an even larger number of IT departments to warrant an OS free option. It helps bring business to a computer manufacturer as well as save the buyer some much needed cash. The only people that wont be making out in this deal is MS and that is probably the only reason why there is no msdos/no OS option. Funny how the multi billion dollar company always gets theirs...
-
Well, I'm out. I'm just not going to buy this when I have to pay $117.80 for a windows license I will never use. That's just stupid, especially when it brings the price up from just under $300 to $417.
I have proof. -
Under software options, check to see if adding Adobe X Standard subtracts about $150 off of your order.
SD just put this up, Checked it out, I have a computer in my cart for about the same price of the DOS configuration but with WIN7, which you can replace. -
That would be a killer deal though. -
PS. You might want to upgrade to the E-350, its worth it. But if you want the cheapest price, E-240 will still be good. -
The DOS option has been pulled. Enjoy your useless windows licenses.
-
See there may be a fancy workaround, but we shouldnt have to do that. Forcing consumers to buy a product is just plain wrong. Imagine ordering a hot dog from a vendor for $1 but as you enter checkout they slather it with mayo and add $.25. You then say "no I dont want mayo, sir" and they reply with "tough luck thats how they come". Same idea and I HATE mayo.
-
I might snatch one of the Adobe Acrobat X Standard "discounted" ones, although I think there's quite a high chance Lenovo won't honor those

snagged 4GB micron ram from crucial for $50 shipped. Excited! -
I ordered an "Acrobat" version, too...these ones will probably be canceled (since it's required that you buy Office)...but who knows! -
-
Well I'm not going to be buying one. There's no way I'm going to let them scam me into paying $117.80 for a windows license I don't need or want. Of course the guy at Lenovo chat would say it was a "website error".
They can easily include that option and still support the machine in warranty. -
Will put the stock part out on craigslist for $20 no problem.
-
It was a website error. -
It's the principle of the matter. It has nothing to do with a website "error", it's about not having choice and forcing you to buy a windows license (geez how many times do I have to say it in this thread???) if you need it or not.
What if you already had a windows license that you bought in a retail store or somewhere else, or you don't use windows at all, and then you were forced to pay $117.80 on top of a $300 machine. Would you do it? -
If you want, you can buy my DOS version if I end up with two of them. -
I want it new.
-
Received the "shipped" e-mail today for my DOS x120e, two days ahead-of-schedule. Anyone else get lucky?
-
-
Mines also Shipped
-
-
Interestingly enough, I just got a shipment confirmation for my X120e order (5 days ahead of schedule), placed with the Adobe Acrobat X "glitch." Looks like Lenovo honored the discounted pricing!
-
I got a shipment confirmation on my AdobeX order as well. Sweet!
Such a great deal. Thanks for the gimmie Lenovo! -
LOL Awesome! Hoping to see mine ship tomorrow
Does your build still show the Acrobat item added? This is going to be one hell of a deal! Have an 8 GB kit on the way to slap in there -
I have not gotten a confirmation yet
I order the model with adobe discount at Feb 23 !
Hope hear the shipped news as soon as possible -
Lucky guys. Hope you really enjoy them as much as I would.
