I'd avoid them unless you were absolutely 100% sure they were legitimate first-party batteries. I've heard about knock-offs losing a massive amount of their capacity after just a few months. The extra money you pay is definitely worth it in this case.

hey guys, currently downloading mass effect 2. think it'll play?

I was able to play assassin's creed 2 brotherhood on lowest settings. it worked on regular settings but was much smoother on low and had minimum lag on low settings

is it possible mass effect 2 will play on regular settings?

How do you guys play 1080p movies? Aka those 10gb files saved on your laptops?

I downloaded K-Lite pack and I get some slight stuttering when playin with WMP and can't play at all with VLC.

Also, I installed a Samsung 470 64gb SSD and I get at LEAST an hour more of battery life (with the power manager extend battery life option I get 7:56 hrs)

Also, if anyone is having troubles installing Power Manager, disable your firewall and it should work.

I'm planning to use CoreAVC to try to play 1080p x264 content on my x120 when it arrives hopefully next week. This latest update to CoreAVC has added the ability to use any ATI GPU to accelerate the playback whereas it used to be Nvidia CUDA capable only. So having some high hopes for that.

As a player I'm going to use wither ZoomPlayer or Media Player Classic Home Cinema. I do already have a licence for the ZP, so that might be my choice. For Audio playback I'll most likely go with AC3Filter.

And always good things to install:

MadVR rendering surface. Do note that in order to get this to work you need to modify your players settings, both players above will support MadVR, but need to be told through their settings to change to it.

Haali Media Splitter so that all the .mkv's actually play :)

If you find something that doesn't play with this combo, just google for the latest ffdshow and install it.

And if you haven't seen this before, Ninite helps you to install many small applications in one go that are basically a bare necessity in todays world. Made my life a lot easier.

I'm planning to try to use QuickTime for my *.mov needs, but it remains to be seen if the playback speed on that solution alone is going to be smooth enough.

You need to use hardware acceleration to play 1080p video files. I'd suggest following this guide to setting up Media Player Classic Home Cinema with DXVA: Watching H.264 videos using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) >> My collection of short anime reviews

(It's anime-centric, but the procedure is essentially the same to handle any H264 video, though you could skip the subtitle setup steps).

Agreed. I finally installed Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot w/ Windows 7 Professional on a Corsair F120 SSD.

Everything is so much faster now. I guess I won't need to ditch the laptop anymore. Everything is better except the inability to play HD videos which I can boot back into Win7 if I need to.

Otherwise, the battery life is bettery. in Linux Strange.

    I live in the U.K and really want to get this laptop. I was planning on getting one of my friends living in the US to order one and then ship it me when they recieve it. I don't mind the U.S keyboard layout being different. I just have a few questions;
    1) Does the lenovo standard warranty work in the U.K? (There are quite a few reports of defects and this has left me a bit worried about ordering it as I'll be screwed if something major went wrong)
2)Is the x120e charger the same as the x100e? (is the x120e charger a standard lenovo charger?)

Really quick question, is there supposed to be a difference in resistances among the trackpad buttons? (not the touchpad buttons)

I don't think Lenovo's engineers thought, "You know, the right mouse button should have less resistance than the left one, just because...".

On the other hand, due to manufacturing tolerances, they're not going to be exactly the same -- my left trackpoint button requires more effort than my right one (as in, I'll sometimes think I clicked, but it won't register), but I just figured it was a quirk of my particular machine.

By being OCD, like me ;)

My right button requires a slightly more solid push to activate a click, but it's very negligible. If it is a big issue for you, or if you feel that the difference is significant, contact Lenovo Support and try to get a replacement.

Definitive gaming information on this notebook? Does it have the ability to play source games (namely TF2) at 30+ fps stable at any settings? How about Mass Effect? Overall system response time?

My m17x in my signature right now is being sold, and I'm currently using Windows 7 on my CR-48, and it's just not enough. Trying to decide between cost/value/performance of something like the x120e versus a Macbook Air for ultraportable, lightweight consumption and occasional gaming when away from my desktop.

    There's a short thread on this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/560371-x120e-wow-world-warcraft.html

Anandtech did a test of some games on the Vaio YB and HP dm1z, which uses the same E-350 APU as the x120e: More of AMD?s Brazos E-350 with the MSI X370 and Sony VAIO YB - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News and More of AMD?s Brazos E-350 with the MSI X370 and Sony VAIO YB - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

They tested TF2 at Low detail (though not sure what resolution), and reported an average 37 fps, so that's probably playable.

I got mine yesterday. 5 days from US to Finland, not bad.

I absolutely love it. The keyboard is so much better than I had anticipated and after installing the bios update and the powermanager update I don't get any hickups. Haven't tested HD video playback yet though.

Even though the lil'thing came without the 3G card and bluetooth, the software for those was installed. Which I found a bit odd, but perhaps they just have one default image that they drop on all X120's and call it a day.

Speaking of 3G cards, any suggestions what to get that would work either straight out of the box or with minimal modifying?

Can anyone check how much space is left and capacity of the recovery drive?

I'm noticing my machine has an empty partition, and when I run Lenovo Product Recovery it's throwing "backup not found" errors.

Also, did your Windows 7 came preactivated? Mine didn't for some reason, first time I noticed this on new Win 7 laptops.

I just notice something very useful on the x120e, if you push fn key 2 time, it act as you are holding the fn key down the whole time. To exit that mode just press the fn key one more time. I use it to adjust the volume and brightness with one hand.

Hi, I've been having some problems with windows on the x120e.

What are the necessary drivers I should install? I'm afraid I missed something.

Are the windows service modules for lenovo or is it the windows update stuff?

Aside from the BIOS, an alternative is to use Power Manager. In Power Manager, switch to the Advanced interface. Go to the Global Power Settings tab, uncheck the "beep when power state changes". This changes the sleep beep as well (it's probably the same as the BIOS option).

Aha, you have an X60s to compare with! Im interested in hearing how these systems compare to each other in a more subjective way. What do you think about size and weight and "handleability"? How about screensize and resolution? Keyboard? Snappieness and speed? Fan noise? And everything else you would like to comment on :)

    Compared to my x61s:

    x120e has a better:
Keyboard, screen, palm rest area seems more solid, speakers, webcam, better performance, graphics, less heat

    x61s has better:
battery life, firewire, press to select trackpad, rubberized lid

Overall I like the x120e better. It doesn't get as hot and I can do HD things on it. The x61s with the extended battery does last about 1.5 hours longer though. Weight is almost the same. x61s weighed i think 2 or 3 ounces more when I weighed them both with the extended batteries.

That looks like a decent deal if you want what it has. I paid $70 less after taxes but mine is W7 home, no BT, and 2gb of ram. If I didn't have to pay taxes perhaps I could have upgraded mine to that price. Taxes add near 10% for me.

Screen resolution is more than sufficient, and even in indirect sunlight the brightness (coupled with the matte-anti-glare) is also sufficient. The colors are a little washed out since it's a cheap netbook lcd panel, but at least it's not glossy at all.

I'm not going to lie, I miss the extra .5" coming from a 12.1", but the build quality is infinitely better than my old HP ultraportable (creaky, flimsy piece of crap).

For me, even at load fan noise is absolutely nil. I really cannot hear it at all.

Anybody else having trouble with the brightness getting stuck (can't change via fn keys or in power manager)? This occurs maybe half the time there's a power source change when the x120e is sleeping. Basically, if I do

    (on battery) put to sleep
    plug in AC
    wake up

50% of the time the brightness controls will stop working, and I have to reboot to get it to work. I have the Win 7 hotfix for the brightness controls, but that doesn't seem to fix it.

I have the 1.11 BIOS, Win 7 x64 Pro SP1, and I have power manager installed.

Here's a video I made of the behavior occurring: YouTube - Lenovo x120e brightness controls stop working

I guess my next try will be uninstalling power manager :-/.

EDIT: I've updated to the latest Power Manager, PM drivers, and Hotkeys integration feature package with no change.

EDIT2: I uninstalled power manager, it didn't change anything. I think it's the 1.11 BIOS; I don't remember having this problem under 1.08.

@clicq: I have the same issue, not sure if it's connected with Power Manager. A temporary workaround is to turn on the computer first, then plug/unplug it. It will then transition properly, and the brightness controls work. I too have the hotfix installed, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Go into CCC. Pick some lower resolution than 1366x768 (say 1024x768). Once you do that, go to the "My built-in displays", then Properties. You'll see that the scaling options are now available for you to modify; pick full screen.

I definitely like the screen resolution better. I don't miss the extra size of the x61s at all. I thought the resolution was too low for the X60/61 series.

It is also quieter. I use TPFan Control and at full blast it's not as loud as the x61s was.

On a side note, does anyone experience their unit shutting down when the battery level gets around 50-60%? I think my battery may have an issue. This is while using it from a charged level.

the screen itself needs some tweaking in either CCC or look for one of the X120e threads on this site. Someone posted a pretty good calibrated .icc profile. its dated around 3-17-11. If I can find it, I'll post the link. to install the icc try searching for a program called 'displayprofile'. It'll let you switch between different profiles in a much simpler way than windows does.

There also is another profile dated 3-24-11 which seems more "dimmer". I used it for a bit and I thought the viewing angles (especially vertical) got a bit better.
and remember to check out 'displayprofile'. Great program I found out about from the HP Envy 15 thread on this site.

So after exactly 2 weeks of waiting i have got mine. Now....

What i like: the size, form factor, weight, touch, the sleep and charge usb....

What i do not: the screen, the sluggishness...

What i really HATE: i have received a lemon!!!

Every time some graphics acceleration is involved it crashes. DivX playing, flash, wmv ...anything! Now i rightfully assumed the factory install was rubbish so i decide to do a clean install. Well nothing changed.. Updates framework, three sets of drivers... nothing.

I called in Tech support and some guy from IBM office in Georgia Atlanta has been trying for roughly 2 hours to reinstall sets of drivers too.... It's going to go back with or without the 15% restocking fee. Even if this is a driver related and not on die problem of the apu or chipset it is going to be the last time when i'll buy ati - oops amd - graphic related stuff....

    :(

I think they should replace the motherboard for you. Unfortunately you might be without a working machine for a few days. But even Nvidia has their own woes, look up the "smoking GTX 590."
