I'm not a search guru either -- even despite my post and your post, when I search this thread for press to select, it says nothing matches :(.

As for the driver, the only one I have installed is the UltraNav driver: Lenovo Support - UltraNav driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) and XP (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad

Do you guys think this lappy is powerful enough to play hd movies and serve as an intermittent htpc?

Certainly with the right player or player/CODEC support for the graphics ULV hardware rendering.

A simple test would be with Media Player classic. This setup guide is quite decent.

With 1080P fairly high bitrate MP4 video, at full screen ( generally less intensive than windowed to also render the desktop) the processor on my x120e rarely peaks above 40%. Yet, who plays 1080P video? You'll be fine.

I have uninstalled the Lenovo drivers and replaced them with the latest Synaptic release.

I prefer its greater customisations including momentum for the pointer (and chiral scrolling for those interested), though at the cost of the option of having the track point being able to work alone as a scrolling device without the need for holding any buttons. I remove the Synaptic's Scrybe software that bundled with the driver as I don't wish to use it and it pegs a bit of excess processor usage.

To customise the trackpoint middle button uninstall the lenovo zoom utility.

Hey guys! Just got my overkill 8gb of RAM. Surprisingly it didn't do much at first. I was kinda pissed and thought, this is BS. I did a full system restore through Rescue and Recovery and started updates through there.
Now this thing is flying, I must admit, I probably did something wrong - maybe uninstalled or installed something wrong, a mistake here or there- because now it is awesome. Flying like a bird.

I still have yet to try the microphone again since I haven't gotten around to it, if it still has the same buzzing issue, I'll call and let y'all know whats up.

Also I pretty much took away a ton of ultranav features that may have been slowing a few things down while browsing and received this message:
Maybe I just need to do a registry clean up with CCleaner to make it go away? Any thoughts?

It's a problem with the latest UltraNav drivers from Lenovo. Just wait for a new release or downgrade if you can find the older version

The only problem you might run into is when the format of the movie is not hardware accelerated, Netflix HD streaming does not play well with this laptop.

Yeah, it really isn't THAT important. I mainly ordered it to use with BT keyboard and mice as I would've been able to use it with both my x120e and as well as my moto atrix phone

Anandtech tested it in their review of the Sony YB/HP dm1z which is essentially the same platform as the x120e: More of AMD?s Brazos E-350 with the MSI X370 and Sony VAIO YB - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

At 1366x768 DX10 minimum, the average FPS was about 16 fps, compared with 14 fps for the Asus 1215N. So if it works well enough for you on the 1215N, it should be OK on the x120e.

OK, there is a problem of booting from the usb cd. I posted before about the clonezilla cd live boot up problem with the x120e.

I have other ways of cloning so that is really not an issue for me.

The issue is why the dvd/cd usb did not boot. So I made a ubuntu CD which is kind of universal linux cd for demo and install. Guess what, it did not boot.

I just went over the bios again and again. There is nothing obvious which would prevent it from booting.

Nex I just put in a window 7 cd and see what happens. By the way the usb cd is working fine tested it, no problem.

What good is the recovery media if the cd/dvd wont boot?

Oh by the way, I tried all 3 usb ports.

What is your UEFI boot setting set to? If it's set to UEFI only, then non-UEFI discs (i.e. just about everything but the Win 7 disc and recent versions of Ubuntu) won't work.

The x120e is styled similar to the larger TPs but it's build quality is basically the same as the TP Edge line. If you look at the TP Edge 11 it appears to be virtually identical hardware (keyboard, track pad, housings etc) even though the computing parts aren't the same.

I was looking at a W520 today. The keyboard is nicer even though this isn't bad. The housing seams and gaps are tighter etc. It looks better (and it should for literally 4x the cost).

My UEFI boot setting is BOTH (default). I also tried legacy only and it does not work.

I have a rosewill dvd/cd super thin external usb drive which has a TEAC drive in it. The drive does not use or need an external AC adapter. It works fine as far as reading and burning cd/dvd. I made the recovery cd and dvd from it. It's just when rebooting into the dvd drive with the ubuntu cd in it that it does not boot.

Did any of you boot from a cd/dvd drive with the X120e or am I the only one with this problem?

It could be that this particular drive is incompatible with the X120e. However it boots up fine from my HP in my signature.

Hey guys. I've got a couple quick questions for y'all:

    1. Has anyone noticed their keyboard/trackpoint/touchpad buttons rubbing against the screen? I'm not sure if it happens just when the screen is closed, or perhaps as a result of just a bit of pressure when it's carried in a bag, but I'm starting to worry that this is going to end up like my dad's old Nokia E90 cellphone which had the same problem, where the screen ended up with permanent shiny wear marks in it.

    2. The touchpad drivers for the thing were working fine. Then all of a sudden, multitouch stopped working, along with things like border scrolling and hotpoints. Press Fn+F8 and click 'Manage Settings' and am greeted with an error: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver... etc..." ...

    3. Can anyone recommend a good 2 Gb stick of RAM from Newegg that they know works with this lappie? I can search around myself, but was just curious if some RAM played better with the stock stick/BIOS/etc...

    4. I've noticed a lot of people stating they can play 1080p video smoothly. I can play 720p fine, and 1080 on YouTube seems to be smooth until I make it fullscreen. Same with a lot of other HD/higher bitrate videos (like my 720p BluRay rip of Avatar, which does not play smoothly in VLC, and won't play at ALL in WMP because it's an mkv file.) This is the first time I've owned a computer where VLC seems to play everything worse, lol.

I would appreciate any help you guys could offer! Thanks!

As for your touchpad drivers, I've had this issue on all four X120e's I've set up as well as some other Thinkpads I've had. It seems to occur after doing all the Windows Updates. The only thing that worked easily for me was to go into Control Panel - Programs and Features and uninstall the UltraNav Driver and the UltraNav Utility. Then I launched the Lenovo System Update and it downloads and installs all the correct stuff. Worked every time so far. You could also go to Lenovo's site and download the driver and utility manually.

I've only noticed it for the trackpoint nub, and that was only after it was squished in my bag.

I don't think there's much difference between RAM. I'm partial to Crucial myself, but they're all probably similar. I'd suggest looking at 4gb sticks of RAM too -- if it's not too much more, you might as well get a 4gb stick.

You need a player that has good hardware acceleration, and VLC is not it. As has been posted before, just follow this guide: Watching H.264 videos using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) >> My collection of short anime reviews

As for youtube, there's some issues with the player activating HW acceleration. There's a bunch of google discussion threads, here's one for example: Hardware acceleration no longer working with Youtube 1080p - YouTube Help

I've found that usually, if you switch it to full screen before the movie has started to load, it will use HW acceleration.

In addition to the above, make sure your power management isn't set to a low power mode. I was trying to show an HD Youtube video to someone and couldn't figure out why it was so choppy. I forgot I put the computer in eco mode.

The only time when I notice the trackpad nub against the screen is when I put a bunch of text book and other stuff on top of the screen in my backpack. It only happen if there are alot of pressure from the top of the screen, I guess it also help protect the screen from pressure from the top of the screen.

Wow, I just had a chat with Lenovo and my est. shipping date was pushed back to 5/4. I thought that this stuff wasn't happening anymore. Waiting almost a whole month for a laptop that I would be using for school is stupid since my semester ends on 5/19.

Where is the best place to order the x120e with E-350? I'm thinking Provantage, but are there other alternatives? Lenovo is ridiculous with their long "building" times.

EDIT: I just had a chat with Lenovo's outsourced customer rep and they said that "it was in the process of being built" and it should be shipped out by next week. My estimated ship date on the site is 04/28 -> 05/04. Is the guy just lying to me or should I wait?

Something is wrong here!!! I just received my x120e. It did not take a month more like a couple weeks. One week for build and another for shipping. As a matter of fact, Lenovo ships before the estimated shipping date.

What did you order that was out of the ordinary? Some parts shortage may be?

I just received my x120e yesterday, and some point after installing software updates, the trackpad, trackpoint and their buttons all stopped working. I restored to factory settings, and still no go. Hitting Fn-F8 displays a "driver not installed error message", even though the latest driver from Lenovo's web site is installed. I even booted off of a Linux thumb drive, and they still didn't work.

Is there anything else I can do besides send it back for a replacement? After waiting 2+ weeks for it show up, it's a bit disheartening for it to suddenly stop working after 2 hours.

Although not likely, it sounds like a possible hardware failure. I never had the pointing devices or buttons quit working even after uninstalling the drivers. Have you tried uninstalling the Ultranav driver and utility and reinstalling them through Lenovo System Update? If they aren't installed you will get the error message when pressing Fn+F8.

I ordered the E-240 one and upgraded the CPU to E-350. Other than that, everything is regular. I don't even have bluetooth. I ordered on 4/14 so it been only 6 days. I wonder why they moved my shipping date back even when the CS said its been sent to the warehouse to be built. He was probably pulling crap out of his butt.

I received my x120e 2 days ago, and have some questions:

I have the 6 six cell battery, but when I boot up with a fully charged battery batterybar shows 4:38 remaining. Can I do anything other than the obvious to extend this?

What do the red trimmed mouse buttons and the centering button with the 9 blue dots above the trackpad do? How does one use them?

    Thanks

I don't remember if I uninstalled and reinstalled the utility, just the driver. But that wouldn't affect Linux booted from a thumb drive, would it? Is there some BIOS setting or something like PRAM that can be reset? I'm a long-time Mac and Unix guy; I don't know the low-level esoterica for PCs.

This sounds like your first Thinkpad :). The buttons above the trackpad are used with the trackpoint -- the red nub in the center of the keyboard would be pushed around by your index finger, and your thumb should be able to push the buttons. They left and right buttons act like your normal left and right buttons, while the center button can be middle click or zoom.

As for the battery, the number is based on the computer's power usage over some period of time, probably the last few minutes. Booting the system is fairly power intensive; once you just let it settle down, the estimated time remaining should go up.

If you go into the Mouse control panel in Windows, do you see an "Ultranav" tab? Does the mouse show up in device manager?

You might also try reinstalling the Power Management driver and Hotkeys feature integration.

The Ultranav tab is not there, but the ultranav device shows up in the device manager. Under properties for the Ultranav device it shows the driver I installed. However, the driver is not started and is oddly set to "Manual" instead of "Automatic" (I forget where I saw this; the computer is not with me at this time). I didn't see any entries in the Event Viewer that would indicate a failure at startup, and I didn't see a way to start up the device driver under Services. However, I'm not a Windows admin kind of guy; I might have missed something. If you know of any tools for doing low-level diagnoses of PS/2 devices, I'd appreciate the pointer to them.

I can try re-installing software updates tonight, but I'm not confident that they'll make a difference.

Last night I was bore and pull some of the keys of the keyboard to remove dust and other random particle under the keyboard. I notice that it has orange rubber dome, that get me wondering who made the keyboard on the x120e.

Don't use the Lenovo software update program -- I have my doubts about it...

When you get a chance, go into the "Programs and Features" control panel, remove anything that looks like Ultranav, and the Thinkpad Power Managemnet Driver, the System Interface driver, and the Hotkeys (I don't have my x120e with me, so I can't verify what they're actually called).

Then install the following drivers, in this order:
    Lenovo Support - ThinkPad Power Management driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP (32-bit, 64-bit), 2000, ME, 98 SE - ThinkPad
    Lenovo Support - Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP (32-bit, 64-bit) and 2000 - ThinkPad
    Lenovo Support - UltraNav driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) and XP (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad

Once you do that, you should have a tab in the Mouse control panel where you can make sure the device is enabled... if not, I'm out of ideas :(.

So it doesn't crash if you start a video-less chat?

Does the Fn hotkey for the Webcam/Microphone settings screen work properly? There should be a preview of your video in that panel. If that doesn't work either, then something is wrong with your camera drivers--you should then try uninstalling and reinstalling them.

It seemed to work fine for the videoless part. I didn't try it long so it could have been it was going to crash anyway. It did seem like the crash happened right after the video started going. The camera seems to work fine outside of skype. I was able to use the Skype echo test just fine.

Popped my baby open and installed the Bluetooth module. Had to take the entire thing apart, but it was worth it. I must say, I love how well the Thinkpad engineers and designers have organized the entire machine and its components. The placement of everything is very well thought of in order to minimize the overall size of this machine.

I notice that you have 8 GB RAM in your x120e. Do you feel that 8 GB is a huge improvement over 6 GB? I was thinking of just adding a 4 GB stick in there and throw in an SSD when I'm not broke :p. I have read that the jump from 6 -> 8 GB is not as big a deal as 2 -> 4 GB.

I have 4GB and that is probably the maximum amount from which you will ever directly benefit. The CPU and Hard Drive will bottleneck your performance long before 4GB of RAM ever will. Any more is purely unnecessary in this machine.

I doubt 8GB would make much difference over 6GB.
6GB should be way more than enough without over-doing it. The only reason why I upgraded my RAM to 8GB is because I do a lot of work in memory intensive applications such as AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds Max and Photoshop (a lot of times simultaneously), so I decided to take advantage of this things full potential. Plus, my main machine had 8GB of RAM and it got the job done, so I wasn't going to settle for anything less.

    Hi there x120e owners,

Can you tell me if I could replace the HDD with SSD? How much RAM is max for this systeM (I see people have put in 8GB, but website says 4GB).

8GB is the max, as evidenced by the fact that people have put in 8gb.

Also note that Lenovo just updated the Ultranav driver today! Lenovo Support - UltraNav driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) and XP (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad

Among the fixes: "Fixed an issue where the UltraNav and PS/2 pointing device did not work or hanged (with the blue screen) if a third-party filter driver was installed in the UltraNav driver stack."

I gave it a try this morning, but it was a no go.

After spending a few more hours on this, here's what I've found:

    1. I have gotten the trackpad to work a few times by restarting, going to the BIOS, hitting F9 to restore defaults, then hitting F10 to save and restart. If this takes, then the trackpad will work until sleep or restart. The trackpoint will not work at all, and appears to be disabled. Fn-F8 will show the option of enabling the trackpoint, but selecting it does nothing. The mouse control panel grays out the trackpoint option. I've attached an image of what the mouse control panel (and the driver settings) looks like when I am in this trackpad ok/trackpoint dead mode:

picture of ultranav settings in mouse control panel and driver properties

After sleep or restart, the trackpad does not work again, either. Fn-F8 will tell me that the UltraNav driver is not installed (even if I am just waking it from sleep when the driver was installed). Sometimes the reboot and reset BIOS trick works, sometimes not, which makes me think that it might be voodoo, and not actually helpful.

    2. Once, I got both the trackpoint and the trackpad working by re-installing the UltraNav Utility and restarting. However, the trackpoint's motion was backwards (up was down, down was up), and then it stopped working. The trackpad's buttons were also strange; left seemed to be a right-click, and right did nothing (the button settings were not swapped in the mouse control panel). Pressing my luck, I restarted and both the trackpad and the trackpoint stopped working.

    3. I saw the new driver on Lenovo's web site this morning, and tried installing it. The trackpad and trackpoint remained unresponsive, even after trying the BIOS trick a few times.

At this point I suspect that the UltraNav's cable is loose or damaged and is making an intermittent connection. Does anyone know if taking it apart to check this out will void my warranty? I'm trying to avoid a lengthy phone call with Lenovo and a lengthy turn-around time sending it in for repair, but I don't want to do that at the expense of the warranty.
