Hi, I recently purchased an x120e with the E-350. I am getting extremely high temperatures with it and I don't understand why. I am using TPFanControl and HWMonitor to monitor the temperatures and just loading Windows 7 will make the cpu temp go to 92c. The absolute lowest temperature I can get the cpu to go with the fan on the max speed in TPFanControl is 59c. When I try to watch a youtube video in 720p or 1080p the system will just automatically go into sleep mode from the heat I assume. Maybe it's hibernation or standby mode, I'm not sure how to tell the differences. When I try to wake the system and it starts playing the video in the background and goes into sleep mode again before the system even lets me get back to the desktop. Sometimes after I restart due to an update/whatever the system will just automatically restart again when it gets to the windows login/loading screen so I have to turn the system off and wait for a bit for it to cool down so I can use it again.
I have no idea what to do and can't find any info through google. If anyone can help I'd be extremely grateful.
System specs:
E-350, 320GB 7k500, 2x2GB 10600, 1.14 BIOS. Win 7 Home Premium x64 SP1, all up to date. Fan is clean and vents are never blocked. Room temperature is 26c/79f.
Thanks

Those temperatures are abnormally hot. The highest temperature my X120e has reached, as measured by TPFanControl, was 70C, when placed at 100% load for an extended period of time. I'm inclined to say this is a hardware issue, likely poor thermal paste application. You'll probably want to call Lenovo Support and arrange for warranty service.

When I check the warranty on the x120e it gives me this: "This product has a one year limited warranty and is entitled to IBM EZServ service. Customers may call their local service center for more information. Dealers may provide carry-in repair for this product." I don't have a local service center. Does anyone know the phone number I'd call for US support? I can't find it anywhere on their site. Thanks

Worldwide Support Center phone list
Word to the wise. If you get someone that you don't understand or they don't understand you, call back and try again. There is a call center in Atlanta, but when it gets too busy they redirect you to an overseas location. (At least the case when I had problems with my machine.) Good luck! -
Thank you very much for the number and the tip! I'll be calling them tomorrow.

Got off the phone with support just now. Reached the Atlanta center my first try. They said I'll get a box tomorrow to ship it back to them in and it will be a 6 day turnaround time.
I was very pleasantly surprised the whole call took less than 10 minutes including waiting. I never had to call their support before since the 6 or 7 Thinkpads I have had in the past have never given me a single issue and I was worried I was going to have to jump through hoops to get this taken care of.
Thanks again! -
Figured I'd update in case anyone cared about the outcome. I called last Wednesday and was supposed to get the box on Thursday but there was a some "issue" in their system and I never got the box (was never even shipped to begin with) so I called Monday and had to start a new case number. I received the box on Tuesday and sent it out later that day. They got it on yesterday due to some mishap at the local UPS place then fixed it and sent it back all in the same day. I received the laptop today and they fixed the over heating, I'm hitting 72c absolute tops now but I assume that will go down a little once the paste has time to settle in a bit.
That's that good news.
Bad news is now my USB port on the back right doesn't work at all and they didn't reinstall the screws that help keep the hard drive cage attached to the chassis. I know the screws aren't completely necessary but I'd still like to have them. In the screw hole closest to the USB port that isn't working there is what looks like a tiny yellow ribbon cable going over the hole. I assume they saw it and that was the reason they didn't install the screws but if that's the case I don't understand why they just didn't fix it while it was still there at the repair facility.
New box to ship back to them should be here Monday and hopefully it will come back without any issues this time.
le sigh -
The turnaround seems pretty reasonable if it weren't for the two mishaps (theirs and UPS'). Not putting the screws back into the chassis... ridiculous.
I found this whole, "call back til you reach the atlanta call center" idea intriguing to say the least. I have had nothing but horrible experiences with the call centers in Asia. My only word of advice would have been to return it to the store you purchased it, if possible, since you said you just bought it. I would not put up with that.
Since they screwed up the second time, why don't you just ask them to send a new laptop? The x120e is higher end, isn't it? -
Yeah I was really surprised how quick it was once the shipping issues were out of the way. The screws that I am referring to aren't completely necessary as the hdd cage can slide-lock into place and the screws are just there to keep it from accidentally sliding but the lock is tight when you slide it in (that's what she said?). I can see your point though on how it does seem a bit ridiculous that they wouldn't just put them back in.
I actually reached the Atlanta center each time I called without having to call back. I assume if you call between 9a-5p EST M-F you will get them every time. I bought the x120e on another forum, so I can't return it.
I don't want to think that something else may be messed up when it gets back but if there is I will definitely see if it is even possible that they send me a new one. Now I am just worried that something may be wrong with it that I don't notice right away and bites me in the butt later but the standard warranty is good until April 2012 so I should be fine. -
Last update hopefully. I received the x120e back yesterday. All the ports work and they put the screws back in that they left out last time. My only complaint is that it seems like they took almost two weeks holding for parts when the summary sheet that came back with the x120e says all they did was "Reseat Component". Everything that I can physically check works now, hopefully it stays that way.
Side note: I really wish the stickers they use to write the repair numbers or whatever down on and stick to various components were easily removable/resin free...
