I'm debating on whether I should get a 3 yr NBD on site warranty for an x200 or if I should just stick with the default 1 year base warranty. Quite a chunk of change for extended warranty.

Just curious about the reliability of the x200 over the long run?

I'd say it depends on how much you paid for it, how long you intend to keep it, and how frequently and carelessly you plan to travel with it. Thinkpads are very well built, but if you carry it with you every day for 3 years you will put a lot of stress on it and there is a decent chance that something will break. If it is the Hard drive, RAM, or even the keyboard it will probably be cheaper to just fix it yourself. If however, the LCD, motherboard, video card, etc. starts acting up, there is almost nothing that you can do about it, but a warranty may save you.

I had an issue with the motherboard of my T40 about halfway into its 3rd year. I would often hold it by one corner, and this caused a fair amount of motherboard flex. Eventually, the video card connection to the mainboard became undone, and I had problems. I still had a 3 year depot warranty and they replaced the board for me without hassle (they sent me a prepaid box, I shipped my T40 to them, they fixed it and overnighted it back to me). Something like this could happen to yours if you handle it often enough, although the rollcage was designed to fix the exact problem that my T40 had. They fixed my machine so well, that I actually used it a full two years after they fixed it.

So the question is, how long do you want to keep it and if it breaks, do you think you will be able to find a replacement that you would like at a low enough price point that makes the extra money ($100/$200?)
for the 3 year warranty necessary.

If hardware issues are going to arise, you'll likely see 'em in the first 6 months. However, the accidental damage plan is, IMHO, good for the clumsy, careless, unlucky, or those who don't have the cash to replace the system if it meets an untimely demise.

I went with the 3yr accidental damage plan. No laptops have been prematurely retired in my care but cash flow will be an issue until I'm out of school.

I went with the 3year depot which is about an extra $119.

i went with the 1 year accidental upgrade with depot.

so im pretty sure if you don't get the option now - you can upgrade before your year is over, which is what i plan to do unless i do what i do i normally do and just buy a new laptop by then :)

You can only upgrade the warranty once though.

I'm thinking of getting 3 yr depot warranty because of SSD mainly. I got an e-mail from Lenovo to purchase extended warranty via online. I was just waiting till my bill comes. I spent so much the past month, so I was waiting for current billing statement to end.

Wait why because of the SSD? Just because it isnt "proven" vs traditional hard drives? It is SLC not MLC :), but I guess it doesn't hurt. I am more doing it for the motherboard and LCD.

Same goes for motherboard and LCD too, but if SSD breaks, in case, I think it's worth it to just pay up $119 now than much more later. My previous laptop - my motherboard broke and it costed me $700 to replace it. So I switched to Lenovo X200. I think I should get a warranty anyhow.
