i am on the verge of buying the the x200s, i am only concerned with the processor speed. I will be using it for running audio analysis programs and pro tools recording software, fore simple two track recordings. is it possible for me to swap the processor for a faster one, and what can i swap it with?or should i just get the x200?

Well obviously processor speed would benefit you. But the x200s would certainly work fine too. I believe the processors are soldered.

Any reason why you want the x200s over the x200 specifically? I say go with the x200 if you really want the fastest machine you can get in that size.

well the battery life, and i have been told that the x200s is more durable.

I wouldn't say the x200s is more durable, but it's certainly lighter. The main reasons to get the x200s is weight, the WXGA+ LED display, battery life, and if you like Low voltage CPUs (more efficient, less heat).

Technically the x200s should be available with a 2.13GHz SL9600, but for some reason it's not offered in the normal US sales channel.

I've tried both X200 and X200s, and believe me, there's no difference in ruggedness between the two laptops. There exists a X200 with P8700 (2.53Ghz) You should try to get this model if CPU power is what you need.
Regarding battery life, the X200s only lasts 2 hours more than the X200 on average on a 9-cell.

yes that is the processor I would like to swap with. also I do not see the WXGA+ LED display option on the lenovo site. this will go with me to concerts and outdoor festivals allot, so the screen, and weight are very important to me.

Well if you are wanting to record live then the CPU power should be fine. It is the post processing audio work that takes more power.

I believe there is a shortage on the WXGA+ screens at the moment.

yes that is true jaredy, and I will be doing little to no audio processing. It would just be good if I had the ability if needed, and I think the 2.13GHz SL9600 would handle it. when is the shortage going to be over?

Not sure. Just been hearing people saying it isn't available. You could give lenovo a call and see if they have any idea, but that isn't always helpful...

Some other portals (e.g. Academic) currently allow configuring an x200s with the SL9600 and WXGA+ LED. The SL9600 is available now, but the WXGA+ states:
If you want an x200s with SL9600 and WXGA+ LED, I suggest that you call Lenovo and see if you can order one manually (you may need to try a few times and wait a few weeks for them to get screens in stock.

mete, running pro tools or any audio editor on 12" screen?!? Without a doubt processor speed should be your concern, but working with any sequencer or audio editor on 12" screen going to be painful. I'm FL Studio power user and produce exclusively on my laptop within sequencer (from midi sequencing to running dozens of VSTi instruments and VST effects, tons of loops and one-shot samples, multiple vocal audio tracks, and all the pre-mastering effects on Master bus) and for all that 14" on my T400s is really borderline. You really need to look at the fastest processor, fastest hard drive (SSD), and the biggest screen without sacrificing portability. BTW, just as an example, when I open the same project in my older T60 (T7200, 2GHz C2D) and in my new T400s (SP9600, 2.53GHz C2D), CPU load went down by approximately 30%. I still say WOW every time I see this ;)

Sounds like he just wants it for simple on the go stuff with maximum portability, but the t400s would certainly be nice to look at too!

I do agree that the t400s would be the more suitable system. but it is currently out of my price range, but that might need to change. and yes i am only needing to record 2 audio tracks at the most , I am a live sound engineer so i just need this fore live situations. I would never dream of doing any sort of mixing on any laptop.

well at this point i am thinking the x200 will be better. it will have the faster CPU, and i will still have the mobility of the x200s.

Close to it ;). Just not quite as long of battery life.

Basically. However, it does weigh about 8 ounces more and have a lower resolution if that's important to you.
