The only light which comes on is a tiny light next to the fingerprint scanner. This remains on (always did since I got the laptop I think) if the battery is in, or laptop plugged in to mains....

That doesn't sound good.
I'd re-seat the CMOS battery as well as RAM to check whether that gets you anywhere. Don't expect too much from any of it, though.
My guess is that your machine's embedded controller has gone nuts for whatever reason. Let's hope that I'm wrong and that you won't need a replacement planar.
Good luck. -
If the mobo is friend i dont see why the fingerprint scanner light is on though. Its odd....
Looked on ebay and new mobo is $350 which really isnt worth it! -
OK...one last shot: remove the RAM and try to power on.
Does it beep 1-3-3-1?
If it doesn't you can kiss the planar goodbye.
Fried it's not BUT an out-of-whack embedded controller is not fixable. -
all you need buy new one,, that error will be back again even it will okey,, that's why buy new one
