You can back up to internal or external hard drives. If you want to back up to DVD, then you need either the Ultra Base or an external DVD burner.

To create Lenovo System Recovery discs for the X201, the easiest way is to use a USB external optical drive. You will need a CD or DVD (for boot) and two DVDs (for data).

You can still use the X201 until you get an external CD/DVD drive, around $45, to create the Recovery discs.

Would an auto back up like casper or carbonite work?

Doesn't Rescue and Recovery have scheduled auto backup built in?

Backup isn't required and you can turn off the nagging. However, I would highly recommend borrowing an external optical drive from someone, or buying one. Create the factory DVD disk set. This will come in handy if you ever need to replace the hard drive, or reset it if you decide to sell the machine.

If you have another desktop or svr to share to just use ghost or true image. Way better. Do a google search for hiners boot cd or something close to that name. There you will find every freaking tool on earth you will ever need. Some of which does however require a higher lever understanding. But enables you to do just about anything from imaging a system over a network, to getting what you thought was a bad drive back up and running. Killing spyware at the root level and the list goes on and on.
