I am considering getting the x201 as right now the x201 is on sale for $899 for following specifications:
Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)
WIN7 HP, 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM, TrackPoint, 500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, ThinkPad X200 Series 9 cell Li-Ion Battery
It seems like a good configuration for my daily use. Now that I saw x220 about to be released and looks like sandy bright chip might be a significant increase. I wonder if I should wait.
Any suggestions for that? The major concern is the price for new x220 if it exceed my budget.

What exactly do you plan on using the laptop for?

What is your budget?

I typically use Microsoft office, MATLAB, ORIGIN LAB, Coreldraw, Photoshop, watch movies etc on my current T60 (Core 2 7200, 2G RAM, ATI X1400). Now I would like to perform the same function on a much lighter with unportable ability laptop which makes transfer from T serials to X serials.
On a different note, I don't want to spend more than $1100 for a laptop. -
either one is powerful enough for you.
i'd suggest you to hold on a bit.
x201 - good price for the config. but you can get better. mine has i5-480m/4gb/500gb 7200rpm/9 cell. price before tax was 650.
you can probably get a x220 low end config for less than 1100. but i'd wait for a good sale on the x201, if i were you.
sandy bridge is just like any other annual update. this time next year, we'll be looking at something even better. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Except Sandy Bridge is much more powerful even just comparing clock speed from Arrandale CPUs.
The x220 review had the IPS screen for around 1100? With the slice and some other goodies it put it around 1300. -
I am exactly in the same boat.
Was using Dell E6400 for a year. Top notch specs. T9550/4GB/7200 RPM/1400x900. Very good but I wish it was lighter and smaller.
Getting good deal on X201s when 220 released sounds tempting.

Decide not to wait.. Just place the order

Can I ask how you got that? I'm not able to get anywhere close on the website, and the 20% off coupon doesn't seem to be working. The i5 I ordered on Friday with smaller hard drive and battery cost $300 more than that when all was said and done (but I did upgrade the warranty to 3 years). -

Thanks! Now I'm in the same position you were in. Order this now, or wait for the x220? I really like the longer battery life and bigger trackpad of the x220...but I already have the ultrabase for the x201 on the way...and I'm inpatient to get a new laptop. This config saves a little more than $200 on the laptop I just canceled, and comes with the faster i7 processor. Any idea on the effect of battery life from the i5-560 to the i7-620? I don't really have a need for the faster processor.

I believe it should be about the same for those 2 CPUs. The problem that I see is that they said starting price for X220 is $900, but it comes with older gen Core i CPUs, i.e. NOT sandy bridge. Was it the Core i3 that is supposed to be the $900 version one? That's the CPU that was in X210s afaik. I don't think you'll be getting those stellar battery lives without a sandy bridge platform.
Who knows if they'll even offer X201 for sale since the starting X220 are supposed to have the same CPU. -

Yep, these are the older Intel processors, not Sandy Bridge. They claim 6.7 hours with the x201 and the 6 cell battery, vs. the 9 hours for the x220 with 6 cell and sandy bridge processor.
I have mine configured right now with the i7, trackpad, and 3 year warranty for $934 which is really tempting.
Just one last question, can anyone confirm that the x200 ultrabase will not work with the x220? I assume this to be the case, but it would make a big difference on whether I order this special or wait for the x220, so I want to make sure I'm right. -
Where'd you see that the price starts with first-gen Core i cpu's? The lowest processor in the product doc is i3-2310M.

Either way, if the Mobiltechreview config is $1300 with SB i5, IPS and slice battery, the i3-2310 shouldn't be a very expensive upgrade. -
the x200 ultrabase is not compatible with the x220.
BTW, if you're really thinking of unloading yours, send me a PM with your price. and is it new or used/refurb and does it come with the dvd drive? -
The starting price for the new x220 came with a i3 from 2nd gen processor and not the 1st gen version.
-
I don't think there will be a x220 with 1st gen i processor available.
And there also will not be x201 machines with the 2nd gen i processors, for that matter. -
Oh, must have misread somewhere. Might as well just stick with that one then (no point in buying X201 atm then whatsoever).
x201 or x 220
