Just got my new x201 and they've nearly halved the power cable! Anyway, i looked at the actual power packs and they both say 20v 65w 1.5A. Can I use my longer x61 power cable on my x201?

Yes, I believe the X60, X61, X200, and X201 generations all use the same power adapter. Strange that they cut down on the cable length though...

That's right. The 65W adapter will fit all newer generation ThinkPads. However only recommended for those with integrated graphics. All X-series ThinkPads only have integrated graphics anyway.

the X100e and Edge 13 use that same 65W adapter, too.   crazy! :p

unlike other manufacturers, IBM and Lenovo have done their best over the years in keeping power adapters as universal across the brand as possible.

for the most part this is true but the W-series models use different sockets due to their high-power adapters.   this was done to prevent plugging W adapters into low-power systems (or vice versa) and damaging components.

not true for HP laptops. Dell does try to keep the power adapter consistent.

Ya, I have dell's that are totally different lines that are 3 years apart in make that use that same generic dell adapter.

Its always fine to plug a higher-rated (more Watts) power supply into a lower-rated device. The plugs are different so you can't plug a 65W adapter into your quad-core W700ds, overloading the AC/DC adapter.

Glad to know they're compatible. Helps when I next upgrade to the X201.

I'd like to chime in to say that ThinkPad adaptors are one of the lightest, if not the lightest, notebook adaptors around. Cheers for that cos I hate dragging around a huge heavy brick.

but you can plug the standard 65 w adapter into the w510, which uses a new 135 watt adapter.

I agree that thats pretty strange that lenovo didn't use the plugs for the higher-wattage power bricks here. You can physically plug in a 65W and 90W adapter, but the W510 won't be a particularly happy about it. The bios will also warn you during reboot that its not good, and performance will suffer as the CPU will get throttled.

65 watt adapter is just barely enough for the quad core i7 cpu + some other computer components, but it will be way underpowered for CPU + GPU under full load without taking into consideration for power draw from other components....
