Is the picture quality equivalent to a desktop being hooked up to a monitor?

If you are using VGA cable, check if it's not some cheap piece of crap.

I find the VGA connection very good on my T42 ThinkPad. It should be no different on your X201.

I'm using a VGA cable on an external Acer LCD with 1400x900 display. It looks great and works like a charm.

    Try different one :D

4 different vga cables that I've found in my computer-parts-wardrobe gave me blurry effect on TV. Then, finally, I've bought for about 5$ smth like this one:

And now the quality is perfect :)

The quality of the cable would depend on the length of vga cable, whether it is properly insulated from EM interferences, quality of copper wires, and whether the connector has any signs of oxidation.

For the best picture quality go with digital connection, like dvi or displayport (available through the X200 ultrabase).

I just added a second monitor on my desk, an old Sylvania 15 inch LCD. Quality is great, although the Sylvania's backlight is starting to fade after all these years. It is still more than adequate for a quick RDP session, or tossing a movie on while I work on the main screen.

Also, if you want to use VGA, make sure to calibrate with a test pattern so you can get 1:1.
