    the site said

    "Availability: Ships within 18 bus. days**"

    and in the shopping cart, just before ordering it said: 4/20/2010

    neither of which sounds good :(

    It's Lenovo's best guess of when your notebook will ship. It's why it's called it's called an estimated ship date. Just in time manufacturing is one of the ways Lenovo can offer you a great price on a great notebook, but one of the side effects is you can't have it right now and usually the ship times are longer in the beginning of the run like the X201 is now.

    Honestly, is three weeks that bad for a quality notebook? If you need something sooner you can buy a pre-configured X201, but that will probably cost more. The X200 from the outlet is another option, but I waited three weeks for my X200.

    customization is a industry standard. all manufacturers provide customizable laptops & desktops...but lenovo is infamous for its bad supply chain & operations management...

    3 weeks? Lenovo should learn from dell, or other major brands.
    shipment takes about 1 week that's reasonable, but the manufacturing time should be controlled within 2 to 3 days.

    I've only had two encounters (actually, four but two weren't laptop purchases), but my rule of thumb is that the original "estimated ship date" --> when I'll have the laptop in my hand +/- two days.
