My x220 has suddenly developed the 2100 hdd detection error.. the warranty expired less than 2 weeks ago and Lenovo refuses to do anything. I understand this is a common problem for these machines.. What a joke... I was wondering if I got a msata drive and instaled it would I be able to use the laptop again without getting the mainboard replaced. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer..

there should be few weeks grace period for you to extend the warranty.

it seems to be pretty unlucky to have your machine developing the problem only couple of days out of warranty.

yes you can use the mSATA drive by itself.

I don't think it's a mainboard issue, most likely it's the hard drive that packed up but you can always run the diagnostics from the BIOS to confirm this. You can go for a mSATA drive if you want or get a new 2.5" 7mm hard drive to replace the dead drive which should resolve the issue.

Well, if the machine fails out of warranty then yeah, the warranty won't cover it.

I mean, it's unfortunate timing, but that's kinda how fixed-term warranties work.

    thanks for the reply's..

I tried the hdd on 2 other systems and it is seen fine and can be read..It is not a hdd failure.. I have a new 7mm crucial ssd that is also read fine on other machines and gives me the same error on my x220. I'm not a laptop tech by any means but it would seem to point to a mainboard/controler failure??
I have tried to buy extended warranty but they are claiming it has to be bought within the warranty period.. I have pointed out that this is a common issue with these machines and Lenovo should extend the waranty or make some kind of good will gesture to offset the repair. I understand fixed term but it is also common for companies to recognize a common defect and extend the warranty for that defect.. A quick search show's this is not a minor issue with these machines ..(Which I never realized until after the fact. :( Failing a few weeks out of warranty is not what i call reliable..

Can I just get a mainboard and replace it or just a sata controler and replace it????..

I will probably go the msata route, if it is cheaper than a main board replacement.. I think I will order a MyDigitalSSD 256GB BP3 Bullet Proof 3 mSATA III (6G) SSD Solid State Drive - MDMS-BP3-256. It will be my only storage, so I may as well go big.. It's on for $260 at the moment using a coupon.

Thanks for the help.. Any idea where I can find a main board??

I think the price of the mainboard would be the same with the mSata? Have you asked how much do you need to pay when you replaced your mainboard? Just a thought ...

I'm hoping that it will run on an msata at the least. Wth maby the hope of one day repairing the mb. Unless i can find one soon at a resonable price..It seems to be the only route to have a working machine..

    UPDATE!!

After a few calls to Lenovo, they have allowed me to purchase extended warranty! They have issued a repair tag! The box arrived Fri, and I will be shipping my x220 off to the depot tomorrow. My msatta ssd( mydigital 128gb) arrived earlier in the week and I installed it and loaded op system on it. Works like a charm, nice and quick with window's 7 64, Photoshop elements/essentials, lenovo software!!!.

I have some slight ghosting, and a week left speaker they are also going to look at.. Just needed to talk to the right people who were interested in actually following up on my case.. Hopefully things go smoothly from here on..

Just want to give a shoutout to the folks at Mydigital. I ordered over chat and they honored an online coupon and also gave me reasonable shipping options to Canada.. USPS priority which arrived in 3 days (to ON) with no extra charges.. Much better price than was quoted through online order system. great service from them!
