Hi guys, me again. I'm just having many questions on things I would like to do to improve my x220. Please let me know if I'm making too many threads/questions, I will cut it down. But I do appreciate every and each input you guys made :)

So I was really gunning for the Zaz's idea of HDD + mSATA SSD, but because I saw the deal of a refurbished laptop, I got a model with preinstalled 128GB SSD. Right now I'm thinking of what to do with mSATA. Would it be a good idea to actually sell the installed 128GB SSD, get a HDD in the SATA and another SSD in the mSATA for both capacity and speed? Or should I just add a SSD in the mSATA? The 128GB SSD that came with the laptop is the Toshiba one, WEI is 6.8

How much more storage space do you want?

Adding a 128GB mSATA would give you a total of 256GB. if that isn't enough then you can replace the 2.5" 128GB SSD with an HDD (note that the X220 is designed to take the 7mm thick HDDs, which limits your options, but people have managed to squeeze in 9.5mm thick units using non-approved methods).

given that only about 65GB of the 128GB is available when I received the laptop, I'd think even after adding a 128GB mSATA it'd still be short of 200GB. That's not alot of space if I'd like to save things like pictures and what not. I looked up some options, and a Hitachi travelstar Z series 500GB looks like a nice HDD to pick up, if not now.

I mean, if you need the space, there's not much more you can do outside of the mSATA + mechanical HDD solution. If it's not too inconvenient, you can always use the laptop as is and keep your infrequently accessed data on (an) external drive(s). That's generally what I've been doing and I've been able to get away with 80GB drives for a long time...

Been there, hated it. The dual drives is one reason why the X220 is so fantastic. You can get the 500GB Z5k500 here for about $115, which isn't a bad price given the market. Then just sell the 128GB SSD.

Z5K500 500GB HDD + Renice X3 mSATA 60GB (think enough?) looks like a good combo?

Renice X3 mSATA 60GB should be good enough if you move your user folders to the HDD. And TEMP.

I want to try to get the 120GB Renice X3 but buying options are limited (i.e. high cost).

yea...from what I saw the 120GB is around $300 a pop...wish it's cheaper. Would the price drop down by chance sometime soon due to new developments or what not? I'm not in a hurry....:S

In the immediate future, I'd say it's unlikely. I got the 80GB Intel because it was the only one being offered when I got my X220i, but if I were in the market for a mSATA drive now, I'd probably get this. 60GB should be enough for the boot drive and Kingston is a pretty reputable brand. This would be in contrast to Renice who spammed NBR and TPF earlier in the year.
