I'm looking to get an x220 in the next few weeks and am planning to encrypt my drives with TrueCrypt AES encryption.

Will any of the extra instruction sets on the 2520M offer any better encrypt/decrypt performance over the 2450M?

According to the specs at Compare Intel® Products, nope.

Both of them have the built-in AES instructions, so I believe not.

However, if you are planning on buying a Lenovo X220, you should ensure that you get the IPS display upgrade. The IPS display is one of the best displays available on an ultraportable. It has excellent contrast (deep blacks) and very wide viewing angles (the image doesn't wash out when you tilt the screen), but the stock display is very poor in quality.

The IPS display upgrade is listed as the "Premium" option under "Display". Don't skip this upgrade either for budget-related reasons or to trade it out for another upgrade.

Ditto to what he said! The PREMIUM display option is the most important upgrade and it will be the best $50 you'll ever spend on a laptop!
