I just installed them samsung msata ssd and was attempting to install a clean version of win7 when I got to the product key part and realized that I am an idiot and have an "upgrade key" so I need some sort of windows on the hard drive to use it.

What is my best course of action from this point? Do I need to wipe the drive and then install an older windows and go from there? If so what would be the best way to accomplish this?

If your X220 came with Windows 7 the key is under the battery.
