That's weird, my W520 resumes by the time the lid is open (if not, within like 1 sec afterwards). It may have something to do with Power Manager, do you have that installed?

resume from sleep is almost instant but from hibernation is pretty slow when comparing to previous X models.

That's on the series 3 docking and not on the machine itself.

Hibernation is a function of how much RAM contents need to be written to the drive. Boot Windows and then hiberate and it will be relatively fast. Open a few programs and it will take longer. Windows also tends to fill spare RAM. Longer hibernation / resume is, in my experience, the disadvantage of having more RAM.

Before jumping onto the X220 wagon, my old trusty X61 was given 8Gb of ram as well. Comparatively, X61 seems to resume from hibernation mode faster than on the X220.

Both are using Vertex 3 MI and I had a feeling that X220 might have some compatibility issues bugging those SATA III drives, or vice versa. This in turn causing the X220 resuming from hibernation slower than the X61.

    Does doing
    powercfg -h size 100
from a command line then consolidating (or letting the drive do it) hiberfil.sys back into a sequential chunk help?

It's possible Windows is fragmenting hiberfil.sys across lots of little chunks when it goes into resume as it only reserves 50% of your RAM in advance by default.

Sigh, my resume from sleep is still slow, around 5-10 seconds.

No, I'm not hibernating, only sleep mode. There is this option for "hybrid sleep" in the options. Currently it's on for my battery mode... I wonder if that has something to do with it?

On a side note, when I pressed F12 (hibernation), the screen went black but the power light remained fully lit and continued to stay that way indefinitely. I had to press it for several seconds to get it to go off.

Turned out that I hadn't enabled hibernation in my power scheme. But rather disconcerting that pressing F12 crashed the computer completely. This was with 2GB ram and few programs open.

Edit: This could be caused by my (unlocked) 3G dongle

Turning off the hybrid sleep option has reduced my resume time from sleep. This seems to have been the issue.

When I set "Require password on standby resume" to "No", it resumes instantly. When set to "Yes" it takes about 10 seconds to pass through the login screen (when I use fingerprint reader to resume from sleep). Now, I don't know which to choose - speed or security :-/

I just bought the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive (7200 rpm) and did a clean install of windows 7.

I reinstalled all the drivers/lenovo software that I needed (Such as power management). However, I simply cannot resume my x220 from sleep/hibernate. The power button has a slow flashing of green, but it does not turn the laptop back on. What gives?
