have you removed it from the boot list in the BIOS?   your system might be searching it for an OS and not finding one.

It probably has the external setup as #1 priority on the boot list. Either remove it or put it lower on the boot priority list.

    Thanks for the hints!

I put the internal HDD as priority one, but in fact the attached drive is not listed in the BIOS setup list at all. I read that Dell users faced some similar issues as well (on newegg?). I also have 1TB WD drives which are working and are detected.

So I believe the X220 bios is not properly detecting this 4k 2.5TB sector drive! This might contribute to the hang.? (It might automatically try to boot from it but I cannot detect anything).

I would be very happy to find users with >2TB 4k sector drives and booting the X220! No firmware updates are listed by WD for this particular model.

My X220 boots fine with a hitachi 7K3000 via eSATA expresscard. But it does not call the option rom for the RAID expresscard, so I am not sure about booting from it.

I think I saw this issue on some other board in the Lenovo Forums.

I have the same problem with my T420s - boot hangs if there is a USB storage device attached. It's clearly a common bug.
