Hey, guys
I have a question, will it damage the my x220 if a 3yrs kid kneels on the back?
My roommate's son went to my bedroom yesterday when I was absent, and pushed my desk. Then my x220 fell down and hit the carpet by the front face. I didn't even know how this could happen. And he knelt on it and put his whole body up on my x220 when I was about to pick it up.
I was so heartbroken, I only have my x220 for two months and have done whatever I can do to keep it in perfect condition.
sigh....
Anyway, will it damage my x220? It still works, but when I was running the diagnostic test, it did flash twice, 6 seconds for each one. Is that possible there might be some invisible problems with it?
I am a college student, and I could have expected anything but this after a long exhausting day.
Thanks, any replies will be appreciated !

You did not mention what flashed. Sight unseen, it would be hard for anyone to make a determination, but generally, Thinkpads are pretty tough.
If it fell, and if the computer did not have a solid state drive, I would run a disk check on it before using it otherwise. Windows error logs might contain events that suggest a problem, but there is a lot of extraneous errors in there, like wifi disconnection errors.
You could give it a good looking over, checking for cracks, checking that the hinges work as well as before.
[If it were me, I might take the palmrest and keyboard off and have a look around inside, depending one's skill level, warranty, and what Lenovo considers customer replaceable units on that particular machine.] -
wait, you're a college student and you have room mates with 3 year old kids? Holy cow, that'd be a great TV show is all I can think, a script writer would have a field day.
But on topic, the amount of pressure a 3-year old that probably weighs around 35 - 40lbs can apply wouldn't be any more than the pressure force applied by jamming your X220 with a few books in an overhead bin of an airplane, and since the x220 is designed to take that then my expectation would be the x220 is unphased and ok. -
The screen flashed when I was running the diagnostics in the ThinkVantage toolbox. Like blinking, switched between gray and black for 5 or 6 seconds, well, my friend told me it's pretty normal when you run some tests. Is that true?
No hard damage outside except a few scraches, not much. Is that possible there could be some damage inside? It does have a solid state drive, I think. Right now it runs as normal, but I am still worried about it.
Well, my skill doesn't seem to allow to take any parts off. Plus, it's still in the one year warranty. I don't know what I should do with it.
Anyway, thanks so much!!! -
Thinkpads are known for their durability and you can find videos of cars failing to crush the rollcage, so normally, having a 3 year old kneel on it for a while should be fine.
That said, obviously there are conditions where the laptop can be more vulnerable, e.g. when the screen is open with a small concetrated force applied, say, on the screen. But that doesn't fit your scenario.
If the laptop works then I would presume that no significant damage has been made. If you are running a diagnostic test (even WEI), the screen is supposed to flash, so it all depends.
The bottom line is not to worry! If you detect any abnormalities just send it to Lenovo for repairs. -
Well, as for my roommate, I didn't say she was a student too. She is a married assistant professor.now, it should be normal.

Thanks for all your help, guys.
I feel released now. =) -
-
should be all right. As long as there are no cracks. The flashing occurs to test the graphics system.
-
thanks.

Just curious, how is the kid?
-
You could always grab hdtune to check the smart info and see if anything is tripped as a hard drive error. Your bios might even have that built in. Been a while since I worked on a lenovo so I don't know that for sure. That would be my guess though, hard drive issues. It might not even surface right away but just start to get worse over time so keep an eye on it especially because it's under warranty.
Since you seem to have a risky situation, maybe a kensington lock is in order? You could lock your laptop down to your desk pretty tightly and secure it from theft and damage caused by motor skills still under early development. -
Im going to guess its perfectly fine. my kids have done much worse to mine.
-
The only thing I would be worried about is the screen (the panel IS flexible, but we have no idea how much it can take before pressure becomes a problem), but if it looks fine then I guess you got away with it!
-
Try the Lenovo Stress Test, see if anything changes/failed.
-
-
If you don't mind, what is hdtune?is that a kind testing software? I don't know too much about laptops.
Sigh... My laptop was in my bedroom, he shouldn't have been there. I was in the kitchen, so I left my bedroom door open... and then, it happenedAnyway, thanks for your suggestion
-
-
I really wanna keep this x220 until I graduate, so I was so upset yesterday when it happened. -
He went in my bedroom and shaked it down...when I was in the kitchen.
-
Don't worry too much about it, these laptops can take some abuses, that is why you get a thinkpad in the place.
If there was some damages to the screen, it would have cracked or other visible defects, if you can't see them then it is okay.
My dog walks over my laptop all the time, and it weighs about the same as an average 3 years old. -
And thanks for your help, feel better already.
-
No that is not my dog. I have a spaniel x japanese spitz, it weighs about 18 kg. If these laptops cant stand the weight of my dog then it is a fail, this is the lead_org hardware testing.
Just kidding. But dont worry about it, you should be fine, since these case are made of magenisum alloy, if huge external force is applied to the case they would break first, if there is no crack then that means it is okay. -
thanks~~~~ a lot !
-
In my experience, ThinkPads will crack externally first before getting damaged internally. So you should be fine.
My 4-year old X61 has a crack on the lid from the first week of use. Still going strong. -
I am back and coming with another issue.
Well, my battery doesn't work any more. I need to plug in the AC to turn on my x220
.............oh........my..............
Does anyone know what happened?
The battery can be recognized, it's fully charged, but without the AC plugging in....then it's dead!
T_________________T
I left it home today and put it in my closet with sleeve on......
It should be safe....
Thanks, guys! -
FYI, my soon to be 9 year old nephew sat on my x220T (closed in laptop mode) and it's fine.
Sure, a butt is more distributed than a knee, but he's also older... SAT ON IT (it was on a coffee table), and mine's a tablet so I would say the top is... less robust than the x220. -
take off the battery and press the on and off button ten times in 30 sec interval. Then restart the laptop and see whether the battery is recognised or not. If it still doesn't work, then just call in the warranty and tell them that the battery is recognised but don't work.
-
I tried, it still doesn't work without AC plugging in.
The battery can be recognized but not working.
By the way, how to contact the warranty? I've never done this before. Thanks a lot....
one more question, do you think this is related to that knelt on accident? maybe the accident pulled the trigger.
I am not blaming someone, but what a coincidence!
-
It could be related to the fall from the desk?
You are in the US right? -
Could of very likely been triggered by the 3yo's actions, but the kid is 3, you cant fault him/her for stuff like that. Even though the kid may not be allowed in your room, kids will find their way into about anything, so you have to be mindfull where you put things and what could potentially happen to them. -
And, I was wondering if this could be related to the fall from the desk. My x220 was on the table(in the closed mode), but after it fell down, its butt was facing upward.
It should have flipped over before it hit the ground. I have no idea how could this happen. Do you? -
Yes, I know. I feel like all the kids are angels. How could anyone even blame a 3yr old kiddo?
But, I do think there should be something his mother should do, not just spoil him all the time. Right? -
1-800-426-7378 call this number.
Since it already happened there is no point in getting overtly upset about this. -
x220-if a 3yrs old kid kneels on your x220...
