So i just received my new x220 tablet, coming from an HP tm2 which had fairly clear recording capabilities.

However i just tried recording a couple lectures with my lenovo in OneNote and the quality is horrendous. The mic is barely picking up any sound and I have to crank it up to max boost and max mic levels, which then makes for a lot of white noise type sounds and the audio is very...diffuse and echoey to the point where I can't discern words (and it's still pretty quiet).

Additionally, there is a lot of choppiness going on.

Is this likely a sound card issue? Or something with oneNote? I updated to the most recent Conexant drivers on the lenovo website but it's still the same. I can't really believe that a lenovo has this crappy of an internal mic so I am hoping others don't have this problem? :(

There is a setting to switch between "only my voice" and "multiple voices" in the lenovo web conferencing settings app, as well as "private chat" and "conference room" in the voip tab in the audio drivers (they both do the same and reflect the same setting regardless what way you change them). You try messing with that? I think even the multiple voices setting is still somewhat directional, but shouldnt be near as narrowly focused as the default "only my voice" setting.
