Does anyone know for sure if the slice for the x220 will work on the x230?

I asked Lenovo's online chat people on Friday and they said it wouldn't work. They also said the slice for the x230 would be released soon, but they didn't know when.

So today I called the sales line and asked the same question. I was told the slice for the x230 was available and listed on the web as a 1960 slim. I couldn't find it on their website.

I'm not sure either of these people gave accurate answers. Has anyone else heard anything about the slice for the x230?

It will not CHARGE on the x230, they have added a new ID circuit to the batteries which identify them to the new *_30 machines. The x230 should however discharge the battery (in theory)

According to this document here, the batteries for the X230 and X220 are the same: Batteries and Battery Charger - Reference Guide. The X220 and X230 use the exact same part number.

Of course, this is in direct contradiction to what's mentioned in this thread here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/671350-2012-thinkpad-technical-launch-documents.html

Sorry to be so equivocal, but that's the information that's out there. I guess we'll know better when someone with an X220 gets an X230 in their hands.

Something else to note is that one the X230 product brochure, it lists the slice battery as # 0A36280. That's the same # as the slice battery for the X220. I looked through the information above and I don't see it expressly written that the X220 batteries are not compatible...so I guess it's possible that the X220 batteries already had the identification chip already in them?

i think the X230 doesn't require the authentication chip for the slice battery.

I called back again today and was told the slice for the x220 was the right one to use with the x230 as well. It's really annoying that I talk to 3 different people at Lenovo and get 3 completely different answers.

That's the same reason about a month ago I ended up waiting a day before trying to place my order. Because of that I missed out on the promo that was going on and ended up having to spend about $250 more than I should have.

The X220 batteries are the 19 and 29, so they shouldn't be affected by this chip garbage.

the X220 slice battery will absolutely work on the X230 and it will charge.

the slice batteries are non-chipped and won't fall under the new authentication chip requirement.   standard X220 batteries (29/29+/29++) will be replaced with the chipped X230 batteries (44/44+/44++) as stock runs out.   the X220 can charge and use X230 batteries without issue but the X230 won't be able to charge non-chipped X220 batteries (except for the slice).

eventually all batteries will be replaced with the revised authentication chip versions in an effort to reduce part numbers.   '20-series systems won't be affected since they can use and charge the chipped batteries.
