x270 hd vs fhd display - which to get?

I need some advice about the displays for the x270 – is the HD display on the x270 an IPS? I didn’t find this info here https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/lapto...x/ThinkPad-X270/p/20HNCTO1WWENUS0/customize?#!

My current x240 with has HD resolution (I can’t tell if it’s IPS or not) model 20ALCTO1WW – I’m considering replacing it with the x270.

I’ve heard good things about the FHD display but I’m concerned that with the FHD panel my font size will be too tiny for my 50+ year old eyes in its native resolution. I’ve heard that scaling the display results in suboptimal rendering/quality of text/fonts.

Has anyone looked at both versions of the display? How do they compare? I’ll be using the system for mostly coding/writing and perhaps watching some videos. No Graphics or PS intensive work. Might hook it up to the tv from time to time (not that often)

The display on the x240 isn’t the greatest (could be brighter for sure) but it works fine, so I could probably do fine with the same type for the x270 – or is there something that I ought to consider?

PS: FWIW, I’m planning to get the i5-7300 model with 16 GB RAM and the 500 GB HDD (that I plan to replace with a standard SSD 500 GB or 1TB drive – hopefully not a problem).

Your SSD needs to be 2.5", because m.2 format requires a different adapter/connector.


No idea which FHD panel you will get, but it's IPS for sure.

 

I believe Lenovo dropped the HD IPS display option for the X2x0 notebooks.

The X280 offers significantly more powerful CPUs if the budget allows.

For my recommendation onfiguration :

• Display : 12.5" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, non-touch
• First Hard Drive : 128GB Solid State Drive.

Or remain as HDD and upgrade to Samsung 860 pro/Evo at least to speed up your works.

Thanks for the info, the x270 still comes with the HD panel - one rep told me it's IPS. In any case, I ended up ordering the FHD .. curious how the higher resolution will work for me.

I like having the powerbridge battery system and the full ethernet port and drive bay for regular SSDs on the x270 along with the more affordable price. I'm hoping to see a noticeable performance boost coming from the x240 - esp with doubling the RAM to 16 GB

I got the panel your recommended, and I plan your last option, ie replace the HDD with a SDD later this summer once I've had a chance to test out the system thoroughly.

Any idea replacing their HDD with my own SSD voids the warranty?

Void warranty, maybe on the HDD only.
But this is difficult to spot, the worse case just replace back the original HDD will work.

Upgrade to FHD is more concern about your long term reading on the dim light TN panel with greenish display.
Unlike IPS more colorful display with 300 nits brightness to help your eyes more relaxing in longer period.

I thought I had an IPS panel on my x240 HD display (not 100% sure) - also, 300 nits according to the docs - I find it a bit dim, but workable in most situations. In any case, looking forward to checking out the new display.

I've replaced drives before, so that shouldn't be a problem then (though I've read that the x270 is a bit tricky to open due to the various tabs). It worked ok for my x240, so I'm hoping it will be similar with the 270 when I get around to replace the HDD with an SDD.

 

just be careful of how you open it because of the tabs
