I am looking at getting a new x301 and have an option of vista business 64 or vista business, is there any reason I should not get the 64 bit if it ends up costing the same?

Get 64 and enjoy 4gb of RAM. If it doesnt work for you and is incompatible with some programs you use, just request a DVD media of the 32bit from Microsoft.

is there still a high level of incompatability with the 64bit?

what about performance improvements on the 64bit vs the 32bit?

I had Vista 64 on my desktop. I had trouble not with the HP drivers, but with some of the peripherals I had hooked up. If you're just doing the ThinkPad drivers, all those should be on Lenovo's site. I don't know that 64 bit offers you much other than 4GB of memory, which in my experience most people don't need.
