I'm getting a x60s and was wondering if I could upgrade the harddrive to ssd and install win7. I know it has a 2mb cache and I'm not sure what it has to do with anything. Also is the largest amount of ram that this machine will take, is it 4gb?

Does the x61s take more ram? Will Win 7 be more sluggish than XP? I just want the fastest system, not into all the features

The X60s has a 2.5' SATA HDD bay, so it'll take any 2.5" SSD nativel, or any 1.8" SSD with an adapter. However, the SATA bus on the X60s has a capped limit of 1.5 Gb/s and may limit the speed of some of the faster SSDs.

The X60s can only take a maximum of 3GB of RAM due to another chipset limitation. You can put 4GB in to have matching sticks to enable dual channel mode(a really minor speed increase), but you'll only be able to use 3GB max. Also, except for one processor offering the X60s came with Core Duo processors and isn't able to take an x64 OS.

The X61s also has the 1.5Gb limit, but it can be worked around(browse some recent threads for the info). They also take up to 8GB of RAM, and have Core 2 Duo processors(up to L7700) that will let you install/use an x64 OS.

Most of the benefits of a SSD lie below the cap, but if you copy/paste files all day, the cap will limit you.
