I was thinking its a hard drive but seems its definately fan - basically, when fan stops working, it makes a short rattling noise like you can hear its spinning down and stops. A similar sound (but very short almost unnoticable) when the fan starts up. All other times fun is extremely quiet, only this start/stop noise and its a bit annoying mainly as I don't now whether its a defect?

    Does anyone have the same?

doesn't sound like fun to me!

Not just a decreasing tone? Actual "rattle", like parts contactng one another? Sorry to hear it.

So how is it cooling? Getting any heat at all on the palmrest (also how is yours configured in terms of cpu/gpu/hd)?

edit- nice try! you said "FUN noise"!!

    was a typo :D

yes, its a decreasing tone, but while fan is working everything is really quiet, just when it is about to stop it makes this decreasing rattle and stops.

It is not hot, just slightly warm on the palmrest, but I haven't done much on it yet, so its manly idling now.

Similarly I haven't configured cpu/gpu/hd (I am not sure I even know how?); I am planning to reformat anyway, just playing now with it now, all seems ok just this fan noise.... :(

    Specifications are pretty simple

    XP, Core Duo L2400 1.66GHz, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB 5400RPM, finger, blue...

nowhere did it say my fan was gonna rattle!

sigh :) but seriously, has anyone come across this problem? I like the lappy, don't want to send it back..

oh just thought what to compare the noise with - you know the kids' balloons, when you let the air out, if you squeese the balloon a little so that the air coming out makes a funny noise eventually going down - so does my thinkpad when the fan stops working.....

any thoughts, is it a defect? :(

Is it more of a clicking noise? If so, I would think that the fan wire might be a little bit out of place and thus rubbing the blades every once in a while.

If it's more of a "squeaking" noise, that sounds like the fan just needs lubricant in the bearings. Either way, I'd give Lenovo a call and describe the noise to them. It sounds like it could be easily fixed if they just sent you a replacement fan assembly.

ok called lenovo, they said update bios recent release from 2007/06/04. did that - well, the fan does not make that noise anymore, but it seems that is because it does not stop working anymore lol :)

I am not sure whether it was a 'fix' or not? the fan still works quietly, so even if its gonna be non-stop that does not bother me as long as it is normal?

    (sigh nothing is perfect)

I'm sorry about the problem, but that's hilarious. At least you're getting a replacement.
