    Hello,

I just got a Lenovo X61 notebook. Originally it came with Vista Home, but I installed XP professional. However, I now notice that the standby / hibernate options are all unavailable. I installed power vintage. When I check the "enable hibernation" option, and click "apply," the radio box becomes unchecked again.

Does anyway have similar experience? I really appreciate any advice.

    Hi LaurenS,

    Welcome to the forum.

I am not quite sure what you mean by 'Power Vintage". Do you mean 'ThinkVantage Power Manager'?

When I installed XP Pro on my X61 there were no problems at all. Have you installed all relevant drivers from Lenovo's web site? Including the ThinkPad Power Management driver (ACPI)?

See this link for ThinkPad X61 - Windows XP drivers and ThinkVantage software:

    Hello JabbaJabba and gridtalker,

Thanks for the response. As you suggested, I installed ThinkPad Power Mangement Driver (1.43) and ThinkPad Power Manager 1.19. Alas, the problem remains: when I check the "enable hibernation" from the "Global Power Settings" tab under "power manager" it is automatically unchecked when I apply.

Are there other drivers that is relevant? I also came across the link here, which mentions power manager, but am not sure if I need any of these.

Thanks so much for your help.

I just encountered the exact same problem and while I haven't figured out the problem completely I've tested a lot of things. I will be sure to post again when it is all solved.

I originally thought that it had something to do with installing Litestep (an explorer alternative). However the more that I've dug into the situation the less I think this is the case. If you go into your bios and reset to defaults (F9) then upon restart you will be able to access standby or hibernate from the login screen. However, once you log in those options go away.

    Here is what I've tried:

Full reinstall of ThinkVantage Productivity Center. Once that was done, then I performed complete updates using the newest (version 3) updater. There may be a few rounds of updates which may fix this yet. Good Luck!

Vista or XP? If it's Vista *might relate to XP* what happened to me was on Disk CleanUp I clicked on "Clear Hibernation" and that removes the computers ability to hibernate or even check mark it.

Fix was found here: Click Here

Or just type this in your run command, "powercfg -h on"

    Hope that fixes it.

I have just encountered the same problem with my T60. Recently re-installed to factory default and everything was fine then I did a system update and now the 'enable hibernate' check box is cleared every time I click apply. Uninstalled and reinstalled the power manager but still no luck.
Looks like it is a bug in the thinkpad power manager. Hopefully there will be a fix soon... but I see that the latest power manager is dated 1st October 2007. That means it's over three months old now and they haven't fixed it.

Try what I posted above yours to see if that will fix it.

Thanks... gave that a try but no luck unfortunately.
When run from command line it says "system does not support hibernation"
Had a look and the hibernation file (hiberfil) is still there on the drive.
    BTW, OS is WinXP

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait for them to fix it. Might give Lenovo support a call and see if I can get any help out of them.
    Thanks anyway

Alas, no luck with that either. I notice that if I completely uninstall the Lenovo power management tools then the standard windows power management still doesn't work. Perhaps it is bios related (Bios was also updated during the system update). Now I just gotta go try and find old bios and try to roll it back to that.

Not to be pessimistic, but I don't think the bios rollback will help. This hibernate problem occurred for me without any sort of bios change. I then tried to update the bios to fix it, without solving the problem.

I am absolutely stumped. I've tried multiple versions of the ThinkVantage software, multiple bios versions and configurations, several windows updates/rollbacks, along with all of the tips given in this forum.

It "feels" like a driver problem simply because the system doesn't think the hardware can support hibernation. (despite the fact that I've tried using multiple video/power management driver versions) However, if you try the following experiment then you will see that the system can still at least standby.

    Restart
enter bios, and reset to factory defaults (even if you already have factory defaults)
    exit bios and boot computer.
At the login screen you should be able to select standby and have it actually do so. Upon exiting standby, you no longer have the option.

The only other issue that I can think of is a physical problem with the ram. I will occasionally get read/write errors when shutting down, but all extended memory tests run with zero errors.
