    hi
i am interested in getting x61 or x61s but i am afraid that penryn processors will be available on lenovo website anytime soon for these 2 types of machines.
Saw it last 2 days but it disappeared, so i was wondering that they are gonna put it up for sale.
Any idea whether it is gonna happen?

And does the penryn processors make much difference in terms of performance and battery life compared to T7100,T7300, LV T7100?

    please help..
    greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

It's just a question of when. The Penryns will offer a modest performance bump. In everyday tasks it will make little to no difference. Don't know on the battery life. Not many Penryns have been review yet. I suspect nothing major.

omg.. i saw the penryn processors for the x61 two days ago at like 1 am pacific time.. i was gonna buy it yesterday but it magically disappeared.. :[

that was lame.. i would've seriously bought one if it was w/ the penryn processor. The T8300(i think) was only 50$ more, the same price as T7500.

Also.. it had a 512 mb. ram option ram option when i chose windows xp prof. as my OS.. that's also disappeared too..

im verrrryyy disappointed.. and i gotta wait some more time now =/

are you doing real time space calculations on the way to the moon right now?
If not, why bother, you will save 10 seconds on a 3 minute Photoshop render who the hell cares at this point?

    I have an x61s with the 1.8 c2d and I concur...but in a more polite manner.

the penryn won't make that much difference in performance, but since it's about to come out anytime, it's worth waiting for if you don't need the computer urgently. Even if you don't do fancy stuff and if distinguished owners of x61s here disagree. ;)

well, although it doesnt make much difference, it definitely will have a better resale value.
If the waiting time is only a few days more, i think it is worth the wait.

Penryns offer advantages in battery life and heat buildup, 2 very important things in an ultraportable

however there have been rumours that its being delayed due to problems, and wont be widely available until closer to the end of February

Well I don't know how much better Penryn will be at battery life at launch (I suspect not much) but I do know that heat dissipation under the Santa Rosa chipset is still not much better under Merom even though the die is at 45nm. I believe the total TDP at similar clock speed (say 2.3GHz) is still 35W under either CPU.

The game will change under Montevina though when the TDP is expected to drop to 25W allowing ODMs to design and manufacture much more thermally efficient devices.

there are already reviews out for both Penryn battery life improvement and heat buildup, its not a guessing game anymore; check anandtech.com only one i can think of without searching
