I have a 3 year old lenovo x61 with windows vista home basic.

One problem ive had is that I close the lid to put the computer to sleep, but it does not go to sleep. Even if I wait >30 mins, it continues staying on. When I open up the lid, the computer is still not asleep, but the screen is black. The screen does not come on even if I press buttons. My only solution to this problem is to hold down the power button to restart it. Even cont+alt+del does not help.

Im not sure if its getting frozen while trying to go to sleep and then it gets stuck or if there is some other problem.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Either the switches that senses sleep is bad or for some reason in software it won't sleep.

I don't mean to ask a stupid question, but have you tried to change your settings under the Lenovo power manager?? I just starting using Vista on my X60 Tablet, I am studying for a MS Vista exam. I found that using the power manager works great to configure your power setting. I personally using hibernation, instead of sleep, saves battery power, since it kinda stays on, hibernation shut it down, but save your current data on your RAM to your HD. I am sorry, I am rambling, you probably already know all that.
