I am thinking of buying a used X61 that has been used in an office environment. As a result the hdd is protected and I cannot use it. Would I simply be able to replace the HDD, or are other steps required?

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Make sure it doesn't have a BIOS password as well, but otherwise replacing the HDD should work.

Actually, with some luck and software tools like Victoria ( Download Victoria 4.3 Beta Free - An experimental program to work with HDD - Softpedia ), you may be able to securely erase the drive and still use it. Although, considering that the HDD is probably 4+ years old, it's good to replace it anyway.

Well, you'll need to install/replace the OS in some fashion.

If the HDD is actually locked by a password/passphrase, you can be almost certain that the BIOS is as well.
To verify the aforementioned condition, pull the hard drive out, start the machine and press F1, enter BIOS and explore security settings...everything password/passphrase related should appear as disabled...
Good luck.
x61 with protected hdd - simply install new hdd?
