What do you have listed in Device Manager for video and monitor? Is it normal to have many listed?

I've been using Arki's Windows XP Clean Install Guide on a TP x61s. I thought it all went perfect, but when the screen started flickering I noticed 3 default monitors and 2 other monitors (I forget what it said, but they were generic) in device manager. There was no Thinkpad LCD monitor installed. I reinstalled again, thinking I must have done something wrong, and at the point when I install the video driver it also installs 5 monitors. The display is very unstable and has crashed a couple times so I really need to fix this.

I tried uninstalling the monitors but they keep coming back, even while in safe mode. I did a proper uninstall of the graphics driver and the monitors disappeared too so clearly they are being installed with the graphics driver (although there is a separate monitor driver that is supposed to be installed after the video driver). I thought at first that maybe it had something to do with PnP but I cannot find a switch to turn it off in the bios.

Here is what I have done so far...

Downloaded and tried using the inf update utility... it was strange because while the utility appeared to be working, the readme mentioned something about extracting the drivers to a floppy and I can't find where the drivers were extracted and can't seem to dictate where they should go so I have no clue it the thing worked right. Really, I don't know what it was for, I was just trying to follow instructions.

Installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver. All went well.

ACPI Power Management - fine.

Time to install video driver now but when I do I get multiple monitors installed (none of them the correct ones.)

I am wondering if the executables for the inf update utility, Matrix Storage Manager, ACPI Power Manager, Video driver and the HD Audio HDMI Function Driver that is apparently installed with this video driver (see below) are somehow overlapping in their functions. I'm probably way off and grasping at straws. Does any of this make sense to any of you?

The Lenovo driver instructions for installation of the graphics driver are not clear. On the readme it says one thing, but the readme that is unpacked with the drivers says something different. Neither one of them make sense, and I have tried to do it many ways but always with the same crappy result. The instructions that come with the driver download readme (7ld150ww.txt) are thus:

Manual Install

Start Windows XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges.

Double-click the driver package to extract it to your hard drive. The default location is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY (Nope, during extraction, the default location is actually C:\DRIVERS\WIN\VIDEO)

Click Start, then click Run...

Specify "SETUP.EXE" with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 2, and click OK. Example: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE

Follow the instructions on the screen.

However, when the files are extracted as per #2 above, the readme.txt that is extracted gives different installation instructions as follows:

General Installation Notes:

1. The operating system must be installed prior to the installation of the driver.

This installation procedure is specific only to the version of driver and installation file included in this release.

This procedure assumes that all of the software associated with this release is located in the same directory.

If it is an EXE file (it is), double-click the file you downloaded and specify a location into which the driver files will be extracted. Click "Unzip" and the files will extract. Click "OK" on the next window, then click "Close"...

Click "Start" then right click on "Computer" button and then choose Manage.

When the Computer Management window opens select the "device manager" icon. (NOTE: IF UPDATING DRIVER GO TO STEP 3B)

a. Double click "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". (Go To STEP 4) b. Select "Display adapters" then Double click on the graphics controller shown.

Click on "driver" tab and select "Update Driver".

Select the following option when the Hardware Wizard asks to connect to Windows Update: "No, not this time".

Select the following option: "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".

Select the “Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install” option and then “Next”.

Click on the "Have Disk..." button and then the "Browse" button.

Enter the directory where you unzipped the file you downloaded, and then enter the "Graphics" subdirectory. Locate and highlight the "igxp32.INF" (if 32-bit) or "igxp64.INF" (if 64-bit). Click on the "Open" button. (There is no igxp32.INF but only igxp32.exe).

Click on the "OK" button. A window listing all of the available display types should open. Select the display adapter that your system contains and then click on the "Next" button. (At no time was there a window allowing me to select the adapter).

Click on the "Next" button. The operating system will install the driver. Click on the "Finish" button when done.

Click on the "Close" button and then click on the "Yes" button to reboot. The driver should now be loaded.

Intel(R) HD Audio HDMI Function Driver (IntcHmdi.sys)

a. A Found New Hardware Wizard will popup for the HDMI Audio Codec. Note that you may see two new hardware wizards as one may popup for the HD Audio codec on the motherboard.

b. If you are updating the driver, just right-click on the HDMI function driver in the device manager and in the 'properties' page select "Update Driver".

c. Do not connect to Windows Update to search for software and click "Next".

d. Select "Install from a list or specific location" and click "Next".

e. Select "Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install" and click "Next".

f. If asked for the device type, Select "Sound Video and Game controllers" and click "Next".

g. Click "Have Disk" and navigate to the directory with intchdmi.inf and intchdmi.sys.

h. Select intchdmi.inf and click "Open", click "Ok".

i. Select "Intel HD Audio HDMI Audio Function Driver" and click "next".

j. Click "continue anyway" on the warning regarding Windows Logo.

To determine if the driver has been loaded correctly, refer to the Verifying
Installation section below.
