I have tried a X61s out for an hour or so and are extremely impressed by the whole package, form factor, keyboard, screen etc

However, I have never got the chance to do some real work on it, in my case thats development. So I wonder if anyone have any first hand information how it works to use it for development, compiling, debugging etc in Visual studio (C++) ?

Also interested in know what you think about the noice level of the x61s when its put to work ?

I will use it as my computer at home and while traveling.

I have done a little bit of programming (Visual Studios) on my X61s and this is what I think. The low 1024 x 768 resolution tends to get annoying, especially when you have a lot of lines in your code. You will have to scroll a lot depending on how long your code is. Have you looked at a 14'' SXGA standard screen T61 yet? It has a pretty big screen yet it's still very portable and easy to carry around.

The noise level on the X61s is quite low. Even when you run your CPU at full tilt, you won't hear the fan spin up much higher.

Thank you very much for the info.

I think I can live with the small screen, it wont be my main computer at work. I just love the small form factor and the keyboard. For me it looks like the perfect "out of office" computer.

Great, still have bad memories (and a ringing sound in my ears) from old Dell laptops ....

Personally I'd suggest looking at a Sony SZ as a second development computer. Also very light, but that 1280x800 screen would be better for an IDE such as Visual Studio IMO. Just a thought.

That said, I'm sure the X61 would be fine for compilations etc. Consider some extra RAM if you can.
