does anybody here have any idea (or inside connections) about if they will ever be releasing the x61s w/ L7500LV that doesn't have the ultraconnect II?

from what i understand, the ultraconnect II is an external WWAN adapter, and if you're not interested in using it, it is an unnecessary eyesore, right?

i ask, because i have an x60s on order w/ the 1.66GHz LV Core Duo pending, and i'm thinking switching to the x61s w/ a 1.4GHz LV C2D might actually result in slower performance for everyday tasks. But an x61s w/ the 1.6GHz C2D would be great!

the difference in every day tasks between a 1.66 CD and 1.4 C2D is going to miniscule.

I would order the X61s 1.4 just because it is less expensive. Add to that the fact that the X61s has santa rosa and I don't know why you wouldn't.

jackboot, i see your point, but similar thinking led me to a different conclusion.

actually, the pricing is about 50 dollars MORE for the x61s (since i ordered the x60s on the Memorial Day Sale). i am not going to be getting the turbo cache memory boost (long story, but "me" is actually a friend of mine who could care less about technology), so the primary difference would be the 1.66 Core Duo vs the 1.4 Core 2 Duo.

i'm thinking that for basic tasks, nothing the Santa Rosa chip offers would warrant me paying 50 dollars more (and waiting x weeks more) for a slower chip. if it was at least clocked at the same speed, i feel like it would be a wash and would might as well get the x61s. so that's why i'm hoping for a 1.6GHz version of the x61t w/o the antenna.

According to some reports, the X61's has redesigned fan and cooling system. It will be cooler than the X60's model because Lenovo was awared of the heat complaining on the X60's.

$50 or 2 extra weeks of waiting time is not a big deal if you are getting a cooler system.

The Ultraconnect II is an 802.11n antenna for MIMO data streams.
They're probably internal and only useful with the Intel abgn-card.

thanks for the pointers. i actually talked to a rep, and it turns out the UltraConnect II is indeed external. it was described to me as a bump in the corner, with an extendable antenna (like older cell phones).

the heat issue is an interesting one. i guess i'll have to think about it a little longer. any other thoughts?

I think whomever you spoke to was wrong. According the the description on Lenovo's site, UltraConnect II is the WLAN antenna built into the display cover, and the external antenna is for WWAN.

    Heres the text:

    linkage: lenovo.com

You can also check out page 181 of the maintenance manual. The external piece is shown to be the WWAN antenna assembly.
