money is an issue. the t440p to meet up to y410p standards (and what i want) in terms of tech spec is about an extra +$400 which is basically a +50% price increase (quite substantial)
i see 4 main things the t440p has over the y410p
1. better overall build quality
2. better screen if you go FHD route (which i don't plan to)
3. better battery
4. a little bit more portable (smaller)
if those are the 4 reasons, it is not worth an +50% price hike in my opinion
therefore i ask - is it really worth the price hike? is the y410p's build quality that bad? i admit t440p is better hands down so you don't need to convince me on that point, but really how bad is the y410p?
-
1. The keyboard, trackpoint, trackpad. It make a super big difference. It's design
2. 900p is 5 years old, 1080p is coming. IPS is stunning and it will boost your experience so much.
3. one of my friend own y410p and he claimed that at very extreme case it can hit 4 hours, otherwise very short.
4. It's not really more portable.
If you don't need graphic L series is a great deal.
What do you need? -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Really you can't compared an IdeaPad to a ThinkPad, it's like comparing apples and oranges. The ThinkPad for the same money will always be worse spec, because they have much better build quality, and support is way better IMO.
Jobine likes this. -
Do you plan on traveling with you? Using it every day from office to school or to work? In that case I would lean toward the THinkpad if not I would lean toward the ideapad. Did that. I had a T43 in college, went to an Edge at home (and first semester of grad school). and back to a T440s in a few weeks for the rest of grad school.

, however the accidental damage stuff is quite nice.
Don't call me a hypocrite, i bought my Y410p back in June, like 4 days after Haswell came out.
The FHD IPS panel on the T440p is 250$ alone. Not to mention the 100$ you will fork over for the 8GB of DDR3 and the 205$ you will fork over the Quad-Core. Fully configured the T440p will be around 1600$.
I will ask you a question, and the answer should determine your purchase:
How long do you plan on keeping the laptop?
Personally, i will only be using my Y410p for 2-3 years, and i might ditch it when Skylake/Cannonlake comes out.
However if you need something to last longer, the T440p is the FAR superior option.
The L440 is a compromise between both (in terms of both price and build quality), with the Quad-Core and the RAM it comes at 1050$, however it does not have a Graphics card. However it has a 900p display (doubt that bothers you.
Thinkpad Edges are just rebranded Ideapads (I've seen many, nothing stellar). -
sorry i'm not made of money, a $400+ instant price hike is a lot of money for me
also, in the past 10 years, i've never had a laptop last longer than 3 years, so my expectation would be the y410p lasts me 3 years
my t510 barely lasted 3 -

I was talking about the service reps, you know, those people who speak half-english.
My Inspiron 1501 (2007) does just as well as the L420 in the office.
If you want, i can post some pictures of all the old cheap laptops roaming around my house, all of them in good condition with just minor scratches.
Heck my sister's compaq presario will turn 5 next year, paid 300$ for that sucker back then, Penryn Core 2 Duo still kicking it and no damage whatsoever. All i need to do is maybe throw in a cheap SSD and it could be good for a few more years before the hardware is considered "obsolete" by Microsoft and friends.
The reason people replace budget laptops is because they get slow, and usually people who buy non-business laptops like to upgrade more often, to get the latest advances in technology and whatnot.
Some people i know buy cheap Clevos and replace them every so often, and never complain about it. -
Anyways, i derailed this enough.
Let's home Hime isn't corrupt enough to ban me for disagreeing with her/him. This happened to me once before
@OP
The main sellings points for the Thinkpad are battery life, display and of course build quality. If any of those are a plus, then by all means go for the Thinkpad, the extra cost *IS* worth it, and the battery life and screen will up your productivity.
However, if you feel you can live without some of these, that gives you both the L440 and the Y410p as options ( i could add in more). The L has a much better chassis, and the Y has much better performance, so pick what corresponds to your needs.
When it comes to money, people often make a choice:
- Two laptops every two years: each laptop is cheaper
PROS
*New Technology when it comes out
*"New Car Smell" effect
* You can always expect to run X with higher settings
- One laptop every four years: one expensive laptop
PROS
- Better resale value on the premium laptop
- No need to make choices to replace
- You don't have to skim out on build quality nor performance (however after a few years, performance will not be up to standards/build quality will take a beating)
- Who doesn't like a flagship?
FINAL NOTE:
Take care of your things! Seriously. Because you have a spillproof keyboard does *not* mean you should place coffee dangerously near your laptop! -
I think the OP should probably head over to WNSIB and fill a sticky. Also , upping the t440p to i7quad +730m easily hit 1.3k vs y410p which is only 800ish... so it is more like 500 difference untill coupons are out(not soon),
Computer life varies depends alot of how it is used, a machine that commute everyday vs one stay at home all day are total different stories.
Don't brother with a L-series. Outlet had plenty of budget options time to time. -
I agree with Baii. Wait for coupons on the T440p before you buy it. You could get a 15% discount. Or you could wait till Q1 2014 for something that has a Maxwell GPU.
-
I'm not holding my breath for Nvidia's next-generation GPUs appearing in Thinkpads until at least the next CPU refresh, perhaps late next year. I can't imagine Lenovo redesigning main boards for a mid-model refresh.

You can use B&N on any Lenovo laptop. -
I'm planning on upgrading to the i5-4300, FHD screen, GT 730M and Intel AC wireless, then just buy an SSD and RAM myself. Using B&N, that puts the price at $1227 before tax. They don't seem to have a harddrive caddy out for the T440p yet but when they do I'll get that and for the old HDD as well.
is there any benefit to 16GB of RAM over 8GB and would 12GB still be capable of dual channel RAM?
And sorry to have to many questions, but you seem really knowledgeable about this stuff and I haven't put any thought to getting a new computer in the past 6 years. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Mainstream T series laptops rarely will go on sales as they are the bread and butter laptops for major corporations/govt agencies. Sometimes Lenovo will put out a special promotion, you should try subscribing to their mailing list, I get Lenovo offers all the time on ThinkPads and other Lenovo products.
-
Indeed... I bet Lenovo will throw all its Thanksgiving promotional effort behind the more consumer-oriented machines like the Yoga, IdeaPads and tablets. There seems to have been next to no consumer marketing for the T-Series up to now, as the total lack of reviews illustrates. I'd be surprised if any discounts or faux-sales for the T-series show up before January.

EDIT: I guess they did, go figure. -

Buyers beware!
Lenovo raised the price of all their Y series on the black friday sale!
So yeah, get the T440p.
y410p VS t440p - help me choose
