I have been looking around for a while, specifically on this thread, but I can't find anyone who has attempted or even brought up the possibility of upgrading the FHD-touch panel to the UHD-touch panel.

I have been making some minor upgrades to my laptop recently and was wondering if this would be possible. My current FHD panel has a 30pin connector on it, however, the opposite end of the cord connected to the motherboard has 40pins (I counted).

Wouldn't it be possible to just replace the cord and upgrade the screen to a 40pin UHD-touch panel?

I have read only a single post on another forum stating that it may not be possible considering other hardware differences but I cannot find a meaningful difference on the Hardware Maintenance Manual that would prevent this upgrade as long as the cable is interchanged.

The mounting for both screens is different - the frame is also different. It's not possible to replace it with the UHD touch panel IIRC.

EDIT: Also, in order to avoid the infamous hinge issue - I'd strongly suggest slightly loosening the left-side hinge.

I have done a bit of research to find a proper UHD-touch screen. The non-touch UHD does have a different mounting system, however, the UHD-touch does have the proper frame and mounts. According to the Hardware Maintenance Manual it should be identical to install. Here is the link to the UHD-touch screen and the non-UHD touch screen. Unfortunately the 5D10F78838 (UHD-touch) is not available on Lenovo's encompass parts list anymore, but third parties still sell it.

Also, I did have to replace my LCD cover because of the left hinge. That is what got me started upgrading in the first place. I haven't loosened it yet, but that would be a good next step to avoid having the same issue occur again. Thanks for the tip!

EDIT: For completeness here is the non-UHD cable (30pin lcd-side, 40pin motherboard-side) and the UHD cable (40pin both ends).

I would just like to ask if replacing the screen of Lenovo y720 is the same as replacing of the panel of the y50? I mean is it as easy?
I am asking because I read somewhere that the default FHD screen of the lenovo y720 is terrible when it comes
    to color accuracy.

    Hi anonworldusr,

Did you go ahead with this upgrade?

I'm kinda in the same boat but waiting for confirmation that it works. I have a Y50 touch FHD with a defective display and would like to use this opportunity to upgrade to UHD touch.

BTW I found the display a bit cheaper than the link you provided: https://www.usspareparts.com/lenovo...p-41219.html?zenid=an0jrnmqi5d99rg0147po406n1

Update for anyone interested in this upgrade - I did it and it works.
You have to get the correct cable in addition to the screen but everything works as it should. Both touch functionality and 4K display.

Also, I got the screen from the link I provided in a previous post.
Instead of the expected Samsung LTN156-FL02 mine was an LG LP156UD1-SPB1 (never knew it was supplied with the Y50).
It is a far superior screen to the Samsung so that was a very welcome surprise.
It is supposed to be a 100% sRGB screen. The two reviews I found of it measured 98% and 99% and that is night and day better then the 67% of the Samsung (so none of the infamous Samsung yellow issues for me - yay).
Additionally this screen is 60Hz! I was prepared to live with the locked 48Hz of the Samsung but now I don't have to.

I haven't done any real testing but subjectively I'm very happy with it. Sharpness and "crispness" of the display is just beautiful and the colors are definitely better than the original FHD screen (LG LP156WF4-SPL1).
