I just recently got my y510p sli. When playing Planetside 2 after about 5 mins the 2nd gpu heat reaches 84 degrees Celsius while the 1st gpu is like 5 celcius behind. I kni=ow gaming laptops create alot of heat especially if sli but I didn't expect this much. Also what heat temps would it be safe to play until? Is my laptop defective or is this normal for the y510p?
-
That looks pretty normal. I played Tombraider. CPU and 1st 755m went up to 82c. The 2nd 755m in Ultrabay topped at 92c.
-
Hey thanks for the reply. How do you deal with all that heat? I cant even use a mouse beside the 2nd 750m?
Also I hear a small sound from the hard drive when excessive reading/writing to it. Is this also normal? -
Anything under 90°C is good.

You should get a good cooling pad like Notepad X3 or others. The elevation will put the exhaust vent above your hand.

I had a similar question.. I've been messing with overclocking the cards a bit, and I wanted to know what's the max temperature you would guess is safe to limit the GPU to? I know it throttles at 97 degrees C, but I want to set it to a lower temperature that I can consistently game at. I'm using nvidia inspector to OC and monitor temps. My main GPU stays under 70 for the most part, but under a heavy workload, my ultrabay GPU will get really toasty. I'm hoping a cooling pad and a repaste someday will help lower the heat from the 2nd GPU.

Hey, I would personally avoid overclocking because its already blowing heat when gaming. I know Audi suggested the X3 but many with the y510p are buying the Newegg.ca - Cooler Master NotePal U3 - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three 80 mm Configurable Fans the U3 cause of its adjustable fans. Some say that coolers don't work well on the y510p cause of its design. I might just get the u3 but the x3 has such an awesome design lol. I've only had my laptop for a day so I wouldn't know what safe temps are but gaming on ultra on skyrim no mods gives me the low 70's on both gpus.

Even if the coolers aren't that effective, they all will still raise the y510p off the ground, which provides much better circulation for cool air. Definitely worth the investment in my opinion.
-
But bottle caps can do that too, and they're free.
-
But they aren't nearly as pretty
-
You spent a grand for notebook but can not invest 30-40 bucks in cooling pad. Seriously?

It's still 30~40 dollars saved. Just think of all the steam games you could buy!

The GabeN circlejerk is strong with this one.

Meh, most cooling pads are butt-ugly regardless.
I have a cooling pad that costs more than that, I'm just saying you don't have to spend that money since the cooling design of this notebook means it doesn't benefit much from cooling pads and you'd be getting similar benefit from raising the bottom using something like bottle caps which is absolutely free.
Exactly LOL.
You homo? -
I love steam games :|! *runs to return cooling pad*

It's funny that the best cooling solution are actually parts of the original packaging or removing dust filter and cutting of chassis.

I'm just gonna use the styrofoam in the box for now and go with the U3 after a few weeks if I see temperatures rising when I move onto more demanding games. Thanks All!

I have the Notepal U3 with my 755m SLI.
It's not magic, it doesn't work as well as I though it would...
I still get 92~ on GPU2 running dota2 and DayZ.
If anything it's doing more harm as it's constantly blowing in dust and food particles (as I eat chips and such near it) into my laptop..
oh well.
y510p heat normal or not?
