y510p (non-SLI) outputs only a black screen at any resolution over HDMI to the Asus PB278. The monitor is detected by Windows but nothing is displayed.

I know the SLI version of the y500 does work, and is it possible to disable the Intel graphics in the non-SLI version of the y510p?

The 'preferred GPU' setting in the nVidia CP seems to have no effect on normal operation outside of games.

As far as I know, y510p doesnt support Nvidia Optimus so it should use discrete graphic all the time.
Have you try the FN+F3 (or whatever key it is) to control display?
I also use external projector with my 580 and I think you have to manually set it to Extend, Projector Only, or Duplicate.
